Chimiste, reçu à l'Académie des Sciences à 30 ans, l'auteur témoigne de la vérification, par Lavoisier, des expériences de Priestley sur "l'air fixe" (dioxyde de carbone) et les effets de "l'alkali volatil fluor", expérience réalisée sur un oiseau à l'Académie des Sciences le 10 mai 1777 en présence de l'empereur d'Allemagne Joseph II (p. 7).
