Wrappers a little stained and marked lightly toned throughout. Antoine Laurent Lavoisier 1743-1794 aristocratic French scientist humanitarian social reformer and administrator of the Ferme générale. His contributions to the sciences particularly in chemistry and biology are fundamental to modern understandings of the disciplines. He named both oxygen and hydrogen as well as producing the first extensive list of elements contributing significantly to combustion theory in the process. He also assisted in the construction of the metric system and founded and taught at the Musée des Arts et Métiers. His wife and laboratory assistant Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier became a renowned chemist in her own right. Lavoisier was accused of tax fraud at the height of the French Revolution and was guillotined in 1794. He was pardoned around eighteen months later. . L'Office National Météorologique. Large 8ov. Edition originale de cette relation de l'affaire dite du 'Bateau chargé de poudre'. En pleine effervescence révolutionnaire, la population parisienne, qui craignait une trahison, se souleva pour empêcher un chargement de poudre de quitter Paris par bateau et s'en empara au Port Saint-Paul sur la Seine. Accusé d'avoir eu le projet d'expédier la poudre aux armées contre-révolutionnaires, Lavoisier faillit être lynché par la foule et dut se justifier devant les représentants de la Commune de Paris. (Duveen & Klickstein, 302). Bon exemplaire, très bien relié.

Chimiste, reçu à l'Académie des Sciences à 30 ans, l'auteur témoigne de la vérification, par Lavoisier, des expériences de Priestley sur "l'air fixe" (dioxyde de carbone) et les effets de "l'alkali volatil fluor", expérience réalisée sur un oiseau à l'Académie des Sciences le 10 mai 1777 en présence de l'empereur d'Allemagne Joseph II (p. 7). Paper flaw in last leaf but fine otherwise.</p> <p> Early Octavo Edition issued in the same year as the official quarto edition printed by the Imprimerie Royale. OCLC records two octavo editions one with imprint reading "A Paris: Chez Moutard Imprimeur-Libraire de la Reine . . . M.DCC.LXXXIV" and the other simply dated "1784" with no place or publisher information as in our copy. The typesetting also differs between the two editions: The Moutard edition has 15 pages with blank page 16 while our edition has 16 printed pages. </p> <p> After the Franklin commission issued its official report on animal magnetism a shorter précis of its findings was read by Bailly before the Académie des Sciences on 4 September 1784; this was then published under the title Exposé des expériences . . . As noted above the Exposé was issued in both quarto and octavo format. Not in Duveen Bibliography of the Works of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier which records only the Moutard edition. </p> . unknown
