200531198New York: Self-published circa 2005. Loose folded sheets lacking original binding band. Minor creasing to wrappers; near fine. Scarce with no OCLC records located. First Edition. Octavo. An early photozine from Dash Snow; distinguished as one of his more sustained works of portraiture. With dozens of Polaroids and collage works focused on the mythical presence of Hassan Jerrold Heiserman; a lifelong bohemian who once fascinated Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac and was then living in Alphabet City's legendary C-Squat where he was lovingly known to Snow as Papa Smurf. This copy sharply graffiti-SIGNED by Snow to dedication page as SACE-IRAK. Contents: 80 pages of color xerography on glossy sheets. New York: Self-published unknown
200531181New York: Self-published circa 2005. A fine copy save for minor scuffing to the self-wrappers composed with a stunning cover design. Scarce with no OCLC records located. First Edition. Octavo. Hand-numbered in black marker to rear cover 21/25. An early example of Dash Snow's neo-Dada aesthetic; perhaps most effective when he approached the photocopy bed as his canvas cf. Zine Masters of the Universe. With Broken Bottle! Broken Dreams! Snow collages the libertine Polaroids through which he chronicled the Downtown scene with underworld imagery from 20th century pulps and sensational press clippings of John Wayne Gacy the Menendez Brothers and Rod Ferrell's 1990s vampire cult. All of these elements richly layered with vertiginous graphical elements. A low-fi concert of turn-of-the-century decadence. Contents: 36 color xerox pages; stapled unlike his more perishable elastic band bindings. New York: Self-published unknown
184945527London 1849.
Snow John 1813-58. On the pathology and mode of communication of cholera. In London Medical Gazette n.s. 9 1849: 745-755; 923-929. Whole volume. 2 1129pp. Text illustrations. 214 x 133 mm. 19th century half calf cloth boards hinges split some wear. Internally very good. Library bookplates.

First Edition journal issue. Snow first became interested in cholera at Newcastle-on-Tyne during the epidemic of 1831-1832 and recurrent outbreaks of the disease gave him the opportunity to investigate it in detail. His paper on cholera published shortly after his extremely rare 31-page pamphlet On the Mode of Communication of Cholera contained his first demonstration of the specific nature of the disease which he defined correctly as an infection of the alimentary canal transmitted by ingesting fecal matter from cholera patients in most cases via contaminated water. Snow proved his theory of cholera transmission by collecting data on a large number of outbreaks and correlating them to local water supplies. He argued based on his data that cholera was caused by "a specific living waterborne self-reproducing cell or germ" Dictionary of Scientific Biography—a conclusion all the more remarkable in that it predated the germ theory of disease by over a decade.

Snow may have been motivated to contribute his paper to the London Medical Gazette because a review of his separately published pamphlet published in that journal on pp. 466-470 of the 1849 volume stated that he had not proved the contagious nature of cholera. Snow's theory of cholera transmission aroused much controversy among physicians many of whom still held the ancient belief that cholera and all other infectious diseases were carried by atmospheric "miasmas" emanating from noxious sources. Snow was vindicated a few years later however when during the great London cholera epidemic of 1854 he located the source of infection at the Bow Street pump and persuaded local authorities to remove the pump's handle causing a dramatic drop in the rate of infection. Snow's work on cholera greatly influenced sanitary reformers such as Sir Edwin Chadwick and provided critical support for the work of Pasteur and Koch in the 1860s and 1870s.

Collectors of John Snow's work on cholera have tended to focus on and drive up the prices of his 1849 pamphlet and his 1854 book and to ignore the revolutionary conclusions that Snow drew in this paper of 1849. 95503London Longman 1851. . First edition. 8vo xvi 416pp. 4 coloured lithograph plates. folding lithographed map original pictorial dark blue cloth gilt occasional light spotting a very good example.
Parker Snow 1817-1895 an eccentric English explorer was working as a writer in New York when he claimed to have had a paranormal vision of the whereabouts of the missing Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin and immediately wrote to Lady Jane Franklin with a plan for a search. This was largely based upon the premise that if Franklin was in difficulty he would have realised that the Admiralty would send a rescue expedition and therefore his best course of action would be to guide the relief party to him by means of leaving evidence at one of the Arctic 'beacons'. Consequently Lady Franklin made him the civil officer of her expedition on board the ketch Prince Albert that explored the Boothia Peninsula for any sign of the missing expedition between June and September 1850 without success. On his return Parker Snow wrote the present work which Lady Franklin used to promote further expeditions.
Sabin 85560. London, Longman, 1851. hardcover

1948178144Higganum Connecticut: 30 November 1948. I hope you won't reply to this" - a sinological circle rent asunder A window onto the collapse of the marriage of Edgar and Helen Snow the 20th century's most important bridges between China and the Western world. As shown in this terse exchange between two of their friends the split sowed distrust and trapped some of the leading lights of American sinology in a quagmire of pettiness. Enjoying privileged access to top Chinese political and social figures Edgar 1905-1972 and Helen Foster Snow 1907-1997 also known as Nym Wales and "Peg" shaped Western views of China and its people to an extent unmatched by any other journalist or academic. Edgar Snow's career was bookended by Red Star Over China 1927 the work that introduced Mao Zedong to the English-speaking world and the historic 1972 Nixon visit to Beijing for which he laid important groundwork in the 1960s. Helen Snow reporting and writing from China in the 1930s and 1940s opened American eyes to the country's deteriorating political and refugee situations earning two nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. With Rewi Alley the Snows co-founded the Indusco "Gung Ho" co-operative movement to promote economic recovery and they are lionized in China today. Their 1932 marriage ended acrimoniously in the late 1940s following their permanent return to the US and divided their sinological circle. This letter written by the State Department China expert Lawrence Salisbury 1891-1976 was sent in reply to Helen Snow's close friend the medical missionary Ida Pruitt 1888-1985 at the New York headquarters of Indusco. There are no opening niceties. "Your letter just came. You and I must not talk about the Snows to each other. I have known them for fifteen years. Peg is a liar". There follows several paragraphs listing Helen Foster Snow's character faults "unreasonable" "unprincipled" and "willing to blacken people" and her attempts to take advantage of Edgar Snow. "On Ed's side I find no lies. I find that he has been hitched to a selfish self-seeking pathological woman who is set to destroy him financially and/or in reputation. When I told him that Peg was responsible for the arrival at my farm in early this month of two men to serve a writ to attach most unreasonably his car and his river property he would not at first believe me". A pencilled note in the margin states that "I can give many underlined other instances". Salisbury also accuses Helen of greed and money-grabbing and sneers at her "feminist theories" and her inability to produce commercially viable books. In the final third of the letter he flatly rejects Pruitt's suggestion that he intervene to soften Edgar Snow's mind ending with a word of advice: "I hate to see you waste your time and emotional strength in so undeserving a cause. I hope you won't reply to this." Provenance: by descent through the Pruitt family; recently in a private collection in Hong Kong. Single sheet 275 x 215 mm text one side only. With mailing envelope typed address "Miss Ida Pruitt Indusco Inc. 425 Fourth Avenue New York 16 N.Y.". Envelope split along 3 edges otherwise fine. unknown
