He is best remembered for developing a successful system of lightning conductors to protect ships from lightning strikes. One of his earliest models was employed on the Beagle during Darwin's famous voyage and successfully protected the ship from multiple lightning strikes. / Frictional Electricity was Harris' final work collecting a lifetime of experience in the field of early electrical research. It is split into two parts: "Elementary Electrical Phenomena" and "On the Laws of Electrical Force" and includes "Two Lectures on Atmospheric Electricity and Protection from Lightning."
