Acquatinta misura: mm 130 x 150 Importante acquafortista e disegnatore attivo per lo più a Milano. Autore di un gran numero di vedute fu il principale illustratore dell'Album Esposizione di Belle Arti in Milano. Tale album venne pubblicato annualmente dal 1839 al 1861 prima da Carlo Canadelli e poi da Giuliano Canadelli e C., in forma di strenna con tavole ritraenti le opere esposte annualmente presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. Egli fu un abile e attento vedutista capace di cogliere il bello della vita quotidiana tanto incidendo da sue stesse invenzioni tanto riproducendo dipinti o fotografie di altri autori. A tal proposito vale la pena ricordare la serie del Dragherrotipo delle vedute milanesi, primo esempio di impiego della fotografia quale modello per le incisioni, esteso anche ad altre città italiane per un totale di 119 tavole. In questa tavola, tratta dal dipinto di Angelo Inganni (Brescia 1807 - Gussago 1880) La colonna di S.Martiniano al Verziere con effetto di neve 1845, viene rappresentata attraverso incisivi giochi chiaroscurali, una interessante e caratteristica veduta milanese durante una nevicata. La veduta è significativa proprio perché raro esempio in cui la condizione atmosferica fa da protagonista. Al centro della composizione vediamo svettare la Colonna del Verziere, situata nell’attuale Largo Augusto circondata da edifici innevati, in primo piano due uomini spalano la neve, poco oltre due prelati sono fermi a chiacchierare, sulla sinistra una donna è intenta a cucinare, tutta la scena è animata da uomini e donne intenti nelle loro faccende. Dal cielo grigio, tipico delle giornate invernali, scende la neve che crea un'atmosfera magica e avvolge la città nel suo manto candido. Si noti sulla destra l’insegna con l’aquila bicipite dell’Imperatore d’Austria, più sotto l’indicazione stradale via San Bernardino. Oltre l’immagine in basso al centro, inciso, Cherbuin dis. et inc., e più sotto titolo, editore e anno. Impressione eccellente, dai toni intensi. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Neve was surgeon to the Kashmir Medical Mission. His famous Guide, first published in 1887 and severally revised and updated, remained the definitive handbook for over five decades. This is the first edition after WWII, following the seventeenth issue of 1942.
