176p. Text illustrations by John Bradford. Signed and inscribed by Asimov "and nuclear physics for Wendell, Isaac Asimov". Also with the stamped ownership of Dick M. Hoover. 8vo. Original full red cloth binding. Original dust jacket with price, spine faded with small loss and tears, somewhat crudely repaired with archival tape. Hardbound. This history of the early theories and development of atomic energy and the atomic bomb was Asimov's first book on physics, and one of his earliest non-fiction books for the general public. It seems to have caused J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI to begin to investigate him. Nice signed copy. The presentation to Wendell is intriguing, because the hero of Asimov's early science fiction was a Dr. Wendell Urth. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SPACE/4
[iv], v-xiv, 3-259 pages. Index of principal names. Black and white illustrations and reproductions of documents. Endpapers feature facsimiles of fascinating pertinent news clippings of the day. The author, a professor of physics at Northwestern University, was scientific head of the Alsos Mission. "Appointed by the War Department at the request of Major General L.R. Groves, U.S. Army chief of the atom bomb project, it was the duty of this Mission to follow immediately in the wake of our armies in the innvasion of Europe, for the purpose of determining precisely how much the Germans knew about the atom bomb and how far they had progressed in its construction. In other words, Alsos was a scientific intelligence Mission, and since the atom bomb was TOP top secret and pretty much a mystery even to the high military echelons, our work was of necessity shrouded in secrecy. Now the story can be told." - Foreword. Dust jacket not included. Unmarked. Binding intact. Slight lean to spine. Somewhat above-average wear to publisher's pale blue cloth. A sound copy of this fascinating and little-known history. Enser p.394. Book

Seconda edizione rivisitata e ampliata (2nd Revisited and Augmented Edition). .
Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 64 p., b/w ills. Two ex-library stamps on front and back covers. A rare Turkish brochure printed by "Folk Culture Center" in Germany for Turkey after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The Chernobyl accident was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 25-26 April 1986 in the No. 4 nuclear reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat, in northern Ukrainian SSR. [.] No evidence of changes in the prevalence of human deformities/birth congenital anomalies which might be associated with the accident, are apparent in Belarus or Ukraine, the two republics which had the highest exposure to fallout. In Sweden and Finland where no increase in abortion rates occurred, it was likewise determined that "no association between the temporal and spatial variations in radioactivity and variable incidence of congenital malformations [was found]." A similar null increase in the abortion rate and a healthy baseline situation of no increase in birth defects was determined by the assessment of the Hungarian Congenital Abnormality Registry, Findings also mirrored in Austria. Larger, "mainly western European" data sets approaching a million births in the EUROCAT database, divided into "exposed" and control groups were assessed in 1999. As no Chernobyl-based impacts were detected, the researchers conclude "in retrospect the widespread fear in the population about the possible effects of exposure on the unborn fetus was not justified". Despite studies from Germany and Turkey, the only robust evidence of negative pregnancy outcomes that transpired after the accident were these elective abortion indirect effects, in Greece, Denmark, Italy, etc., due to the anxieties created. This is an extremely rare brochure prepared for Turkey by the German government on Chernobyl including the effects of disaster and the measures for the same, accompanied by many b/w illustrations in a very interesting black humor style.
