This study traces the history of gardens in Iran from the earliest remains of the Timurid period to those of the Qajar dynasty of the nineteenth century. Illustrations from early travel books and paintings show the original conditions of now ruined gardens. The author Donald Newton Wilber was an American writer and spy. Wilber along with MI6 agent Norman Darbyshire was one of the two principal architects of the MI6-CIA project "Operation Ajax" a successful plot to overthrow the government of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadeq. In addition to orchestrating the coup in Iran in his spare time Wilber wrote histories travelogues and commentaries on Iran Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
