193052288San Francisco: Book Club of California 1930. Hardcover. Note by Edward F. O'Day. Folio. Quarter linen with paper spine label and blue/grey paper over boards. ix 43pp. Double frontispiece. Very good. Mildest of binding wear else tight and internally fine; touch of age toning to endpapers only; lacks slipcase. Newton's election as president of the prestigious Johnson Society of Lichfield sparked this fanciful recreation of a meal that never happened between Samuel Johnson and Benjamin Franklin who dine at the home of London bookseller William Strahan along with a few others including James Boswell as props. Newton manages to work in many well-known sentiments of each as they face off and spar and the face-to-face frontispiece portrait etchings by William Wilke are also quite striking. Front colophon cites limitation of 350 numbered copies this #240 signed enormously by Newton -- this copy also bearing the choicest inscription imaginable on front flyleaf: "'To / seize / good that is / within our reach / is the great art of / life.' So said Dr Johnson / I tried to get that saying with this book but I could not / manage it Signed for my friend / Mrs Philip S. Collins. / A. Edward Newton / 5th November 1931." The Collinses were wealthy Philadelphians like Newton and took part in many civic functions together. O'DAY 74-75. Book Club of California hardcover
