Octavo manuscript album; 71 pages of poetry in various legible hands on pastel coloured paper each signed and dated the majority being of 1873-4; plus pencil sketch of the old bridge at Ilkley Yorkshire signed J. G. G. Black full morocco geometric borders in gilt to boards; lettered and ornamented in gilt to spine; gilt rolls to turn-ins; all edges gilt; green and gilt patterned end-papers. Upper board detached lower joint cracked but still holding rubbing to extremities. Content clean and very well preserved. A collection of manuscript poetry from the friends and classmates of a young woman of the late nineteenth-century. Many of the poems are signed 'Cockerton Hall Darlington'. Cockerton Hall was between 1851 and c. 1873 a boarding school for girls operated by a 'Mrs. Dodsham' and her daughter Maria who is the author of one of the poems. This poetry keepsake appears to have firstly been compiled from pupils at the close of the school with later additions across the course of Newton's life.
