Eckel Philadelphia Pennsylvania. To Be Dispersed at Public Sale January 15 and 16. By His Order. American Art Association. Anderson Galleries Inc. 30 East Fifty-Seventh Street New York. 1935. In this auction lots 307 to 362 listed Eckel's Newton collection this was lot 359. Both Mr. Newton and Mr. Eckel were great friends. Eckel was a bibliographer of Charles Dickens

Alfred Edward Newton was an American author publisher and avid book collector. He is best known for his book Amenities of Book Collecting 1918 which sold over 25000 copies. At the time of his death it was estimated that he had approximately 10000 books in his collection focusing on English and American literary works the major part of which were auctioned by Parke-Bernet Galleries New York in April May and October 1941. Highlights of the sale included the autograph manuscripts of Thomas Hardy's novel Far From the Madding Crowd and Charles Lamb's essay Dream Children. However the fall in rare book prices steadily through the Great Depression meant that many sold lots brought only a fraction of prices they would have realized at the time of the Jerome Kern sale in 1929. The three volume Newton sale catalogue remains a useful reference for literature collectors. self published unknown
40802This attorney and Democratic politician served as Cleveland mayor 1912-15 but most importantly as President Woodrow Wilson's influential Secretary of War 1916-21 during the tumultuous World War One years. TNS 1p 8" X 10¼" Washington DC 30 April 1920. Addressed to Joseph Cummings Chase 1891-1954. Very good. Lightly age toned with original folds. On "War Department" letterhead Baker thanks this noted artist for "the copy of 'Soldiers All' and keenly appreciate your kindness in sending it to me. It is a book which I shall treasure very highly and there will be many happy days when I shall refer to it and recall the friendships and stirring efforts of those whom you have so happily preserved for us." Boldly signed with his usual diminutive signature. Chase had been commissioned by the A.E.F. to paint portraits of commanding generals and hero doughboys and these were published in the 1920 book "Soldiers All: Portraits and Sketches of the Men of the A.E.F." 47666This attorney and Democratic politician served as Cleveland mayor 1912-15 but most importantly as President Woodrow Wilson's influential Secretary of War 1916-21 during the tumultuous World War One years. TDS mimeograph 6pp rectos only 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. Lightly age toned; two original horizontal fold lines not weakened; staple holes at upper left. Untitled typescript of a speech given by Baker the first couple of lines reading simply: "THE HONORABLE NEWTON D. BAKER: Miss DeYoung Senator Nye Mr. Thomas Ladies and Gentlemen: I think it is fair to say that the most profound preoccupation of the mind of America at this moment is the question of the preservation of peace." At top of this first leaf Baker pens "Stenographic Report" at upper right in black ink. Baker gives a lengthy thoughtful elaboration on the difficulty but necessity of maintaining worldwide peace in the face of "a new triumvirate -- Hitler Trotzky and Japan" offering numerous historical allusions one would expect from a former Secretary of War. He stands up for the League of Nations as he always did. We date this speech at mid-1930s which is perhaps affirmed in the April 5 1935 issue of "Spotlight" a publication of "Students of the Women's Division of Brooklyn College of the College of the City of New York" which reports that "Newton D. Baker has accepted an invitation to speak at an anti-war demonstration on October 4 at the University of .Minnesota" -- perhaps this is that very speech though this is uncertain. After the speech's close on page six Baker signs boldly in full. A quite unusual item probably produced in an exceedingly small quantity and this probably the sole signed copy. unknown

1892457459Cincinnati; Chicago 1892. Near Fine. A small archive of six letters written to C. Jay French general manager of the American Bell Telephone Company including two holograph letters and a telegram written in 1879 by the Theodore Vail who oversaw the building of America's first coast to coast telephone system. The remaining four letters are from four business colleagues in 1892. Each set of letters is neatly pinned together at the upper left corner: the first with an autograph note by French; and the second with a clipping outlining French's career. Both sets are in fine condition overall.

Contemporary journalists called Theodore Vail the “Cincinnatus of Communications†and modern biographers call him “one of the two or three foremost organizing geniuses in the history of American industry.†In 1878 he was called to run Bell Telephone as its general manager just two years after Alexander Graham Bell patented his invention of the telephone in 1876. He helped establish the country’s first commercial telephone exchange lines in 1878 and organized the Bell empire in the 1880s.

The two Vail letters retained by French reveal his direct management style: the first was written to the head of a regional Bell company at Cincinnati to introduce French: “… As he will be in your city for a few days I would like if you would give him all the insight possible into the manner of conducting an exchange and also any other information in regard to the Telephone business that may be in your power.â€

The second letter outlines French’s duties: “You will make it your first duty to visit the different agencies of this Co. and establish a correct uniform and prompt system of reports to this Company … You will consult freely and fully with all agents … You will impress upon the agents the necessity of the Company being fully advised as to the operations of the agency. In all cases we desire reports of the business – In all cases also it is the desire of this Company that the agents’ interest be consulted.â€

The other set of letters were written by four leading managers to congratulate French for his promotion to general manager of the American Bell Telephone Company in 1892. A scarce cache of letters documenting the beginning of America’s telephone exchange network. A list of both sets of letters is available. unknown
