It's likely that the purpose and implementation would be seen as flawed by our current metrics despite the fact that the results "compare favorably" for whom and why What are the criteria for success and perhaps more importantly why are we comparing different ethnicities via their potential for psychic abilities but it does contain considerable interesting information on Aboriginal belief systems and has value as an example of Intruder Ethnography. First American edition.<br /><br />Many arguments have occurred over the centuries since the Spanish marched into the Andean highlands and took over the Incan empire over whether the Incan's were part of an ideal human society or just a group of tyrannical rulers. While the Incan society had created a stable political economic and social system in the Andean world it was far from being an ideal society. On the same note the Incan's were not tyrannical rulers did not exploit their subjects or take away their land for no reason. The truth about the Incan empire lies somewhere between the romanticized views and the views meant to justify the Spanish conquest while it is impossible to classify in modern terms the form of government the Incan's had. Louis Baudin tries to prove that the Incan government was socialistic in nature. Though he argues his point and shows how the Incan empire was in essence socialist in nature it is as Alfred Métraux says unjust to assign any kind of modern European label to a society that evolved separately from the Europeans. Just because it resembles socialism an ideology that was created in 19th century Europe does not mean that it can be labeled. The government of the Incas was created through natural evolution and it cannot be labeled by something that was created in the mind of some European that lived 200 years after the empire was destroyed.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Fore edge page ends soiled. Inscribed First edition limited to 500 copies.<br /><br />One of Guillermo Bonfil Batalla's early works on the Maya and the social anthropology of the region in which he became so famous his social anthropology works are often sited in works on social revolution in Mexico and the Maya region. <br /><br />Robert Manners 1913-1996 graduated from Columbia College during the Great Depression and then worked for Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration. In 1950 he earned a PhD from Columbia after which he taught at the University of Rochester. In 1952 he began teaching at Brandeis University and established the Anthropology Department in 1963. Manners did field work in Arizona with the Walapai and Havasupi Indians in Africa with the Kipsigis of Kenya in Puerto Rico and on the Caribbean islands.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Spine sunned previous owner's stamp R A Manners who the inscription is to at head end pages corners bumped. First edition.<br /><br />This study is the result of more than three decades of collaboration in the development of the Moche Archive at the University of California Los Angeles. The Archive contains more than 160000 photographs of Moche objects in museums and private collections throughout the world was created to facilitate the study of Moche civilization through a systematic analysis of what is depicted in Moche art. When this study began it concentrated on ceramic sculptures of plants animals people and objects. It became clear that fineline painted vessels were much more informative because they often portrayed objects in context and depict activities in which two or more figures participate. In drawing an analogy from Christian art an attempt to reconstruct the Nativity by studying individual sculptures of the Christ child Mary or the wise men would be fruitless until one had seen the entire nativity with figures animals stable and star portrayed together. From the library of professor George M Foster. Second edition.<br /><br />The Tallensi are a tribe of the Frafra people of northern Ghana numbering a few tens of thousands. They speak <i>Talni</i> a dialect of the Frafra language and maintain an agricultural mode of subsistence. The Tallensi homeland is covered by the Tallensi Traditional Area and consists mainly of open savanna.<br /><br />Meyer Fortes was a South African-born anthropologist best known for his work among the Tallensi and Ashanti in Ghana. Originally trained in psychology Fortes employed the notion of the "person" into his structural-functional analyzes of kinship the family and ancestor worship setting a standard for studies on African social organization. His famous book <i>Oedipus and Job in West African Religion</i> 1959 fused his two interests and set a standard for comparative ethnology. He also wrote extensively on issues of the first born kingship and divination. Fortes received his anthropological training from Charles Gabriel Seligman at the London School of Economics. Fortes also trained with Bronislaw Malinowski and Raymond Firth. Along with contemporaries A. R. Radcliffe-Brown Sir Edmund Leach Audrey Richards and Lucy Mair Fortes held strong functionalist views that insisted upon empirical evidence in order to generate analyzes of society. His volume with E. E. Evans-Pritchard <i>African Political Systems</i> 1940 established the principles of segmentation and balanced opposition which were to become the hallmarks of African political anthropology. Despite his work in Francophone West Africa Fortes' work on political systems was influential to other British anthropologists especially Max Gluckman and played a role in shaping what became known as the Manchester school of social anthropology which emphasized the problems of working in colonial Central Africa.<br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. This edition limited to 1000 copies.<br /><br />When the Franciscans arrived in Michoacán in 1525 they found a new challenge the language of the natives of the region whom they came to call Tarascans was different from other native languages of New Spain. Maturino Gilberti a Franciscan friar whose skills in the Tarascan language exceeded those of his peers. When his works were printed it was the first attempt of a systematic analysis of the language and his vocabulary is still the best known Tarascan dictionary. Prior to his arrival in the new world very little is known it is thought that he may have been born in 1498. but it could have been in 1507 or 8 in the city of Poitiers France. He studied arts and theology at the University of Toulouse and came to New Spain in 1531 shortly after his ordination. Fray Alonso de la Rea Michoacán's Franciscan chronicler of the seventeenth century says Gilberti went directly to Michoacán. He quickly learned the language and was held in high admiration by the natives. It seems that his first publication was a Christian doctrine that came out in 1553. In 1556 we find Fray Gilberti in Tzintzuntzan were Quiroga established the episcopal see and where indigenous Tzintzuntzans and other subjected Indians were forced in building the cathedral. Gilberti stood against Bishop Quiroga and the enslavement of the indigenous to build and pay for the cathedral. In the summer of 1558 Gilberti proposed several books to be printed in Mexico. He Had obtained approval for them by James Daciano guardian superior of the convent of the Franciscans in Tzintzuntzan in July. He must have acted quickly because on August 10 received letters from Archbishop Alonso and the Franciscan provincial authorizing the publication of his books. Within the same twelve month period the Viceroy Luis de Velasco gave his written approval. In accordance with such approvals he would published four books in Mexico during the course of less than one year. All were published at the press of Juan Pablo. It seems that Gilberti had thought that his grammar Arte and dictionary vocabulary were two parts of the same work. This is probably the reason why the dictionary does not have the usual written approvals because the dictionary is mentioned in the letters to the principle of grammar. Gilberti died in Tzintzuntzan 1585.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Light edge wear else a very good copy. El Colegio de Michoacan paperback
