188350042Astoria OR: S.B. Crow Photographer Cor. Benton and Squemoqua Sts. 1883. Oblong boudoir sepia-tinted photo image mounted on card stock 4.75 x 8.5 in. printed photographers’ logo on verso slight edgewear excellent image w/ lots of contrast. This excellent original photograph was taken just after the 1883 fire the first of two major fires to strike Astoria which was struck again in 1922. The image shows the smoldering fire with smoke blooming above what is now 13th and Exchange street. The fire started in the Clatsop Mill which was built along the shore with planer shavings and trash discarded below providing a ideal fuel for fires. In the 1880s all of downtown Astoria was built on pilings with no fire hydrants water buckets or fire brigades. By the time it was extinguished as shown in the photo the fire had destroyed all the structures on Commercial Street between 14th and 17th with damage totaling $ 2 million. Crow 1853-1925 had moved to Astoria in 1882 and would continue as photographer there until the end of the 19th century before moving to Portland OR. 1825102273<p>Letter sheets 8" x 12" 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds mostly archival tape but some regular tape too which has caused a little browning in areas long tear obscures writers signature but partially visible creased normal aging and browning remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy 1772-1864 a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson 1803-1880 although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However on the back page a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.</p>

1848005057Oxford: No Publisher 1848. Printed ticket approximately 90mm x 60mm in size no publisher or place but almost certainly Oxford. Remnant of glue where once stuck in an album to reverse otherwise fairly bright and clean. Signed to foot. Dated Thursday March 16th 1848 it admits the bearer and friends to the 'public trial' of a Milner fire resistant safe in Mr. F. Symonds's Close opposite Worcester College in Oxford commencing at 11am. Thomas Milner and later with his son William started producing standard safes and strong boxes. They then became pioneers in fire-resistant safes securing patents for innovative insulation techniques such as using asbestos mica or alum to generate steam inside the safe during a fire protecting its contents. The company gained international acclaim at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 where their safes were showcased and tested live for fire resistance. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 64mo Oblong. 188911467Seattle: Journal Publishing Co 1889. First Edition. Single leaf. Good. 11 x 18 in. P. 1 printed recto only. Age toned single mellowed horizontal crease five-inch vertical closed tear from the top edge with aged cello tape repair verso small edge chips. Single-page issue of the short-lived Seattle Morning Journal published the day after the fire leading with the headline: "IN ASHES Seattle Sorely Visited by Fearful Fire." With their headquarters destroyed the Journal staff had temporarily moved into the printing office of Benjamin Baker Dearborn. <p>While the competing but long-established Post-Intelligencer on the same day incorrectly attributed the origin of the fire to an overturned glue pot in McGaugh's sign shop the Journal reports here "It is learned that the fire started in the carpenter shop under the sign works. A workman was melting glue with a gasoline lamp and the lamp exploded." This report has withstood historical scrutiny but has gone unrecognized.<br /> <p>Seattle's commercial Daily Trade Journal was started in 1888 but within a year had changed owners dropped "Trade" from its name and expanded focus to include daily local events. The Seattle Directory for 1889 lists the editor as E. W. S. Tingle. While the self-described Democratic-leaning paper survived the Great Fire the paper was only printed into the mid-1890s.Meany Newspapers of Washington Territory 48-49.<p>A very scarce item of Seattleana. R.T. Conrad'; second 'Fireman's Address. Written at the request of the Association for the Relief of Disabled Firemen' by 'Hon. Robert T. Conrad'; third 'Address of Philip S. White Esq.' Very Good.<br /> <br /> The ceremony seeks to make amends for Philadelphia's long history of antipathy to Irish Catholics. Conrad had been elected Mayor of Philadelphia on a Know-Nothing platform that capitalized on anti-Irish sentiment. But he says here "Whatever prejudices may have existed in regard to fireman sic have disappeared before the favorable evidence of the past and present conduct and character." Also a poet and writer Conrad composed a poem for the occasion printed in the second column. <br /> Praising the Company in column three was a leading temperance advocate Philip S. White. 1895178376Japan.: 星野嘉吉. Hoshino Kakichi. Meiji 28 1895. Black and white illustrations foldout illustration 20 x 14cm 8pp unpaginated. Slight fold crease at the centre else a lovely clean and tight copy. This advertisement catalogue of Japanese fire pumps was published in 1895 with delicately fine illustrations. The pumps are manufactured by Hoshino Kakichi Factory in Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima prefecture. The catalogue shows a black and white illustration of the factory compound as well as 6 types of fire pumps. Each pump is illustrated with its specification information including how far water spray can reach. 3 of them have 2 wheels and the rest with 4 wheels. In its foreword the owner claims that it is necessary to have a fire pump at hand as houses in the area are venerable for fire due to their thatched roofs. Marie Blaze de Bury or Baroness Rose Blaze de Bury or Marie Pauline Rose Blaze de Bury 1813-1894 published a number of works 5 novels 6 works of non-fiction and a book of poetry under the pseudonyms Hamilton Murray and Arthur Dudley. She was a Scottish-born political writer educated in France and was notably opposed to the rule of Napoleon and there were reports that she was an agent for Austria or England. In 1844 she married the writer Henri Blaze de Bury who she had met in 1840 and they resided for most of their lives in Paris. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. And apparently uncommon: Huntington Berkeley UCLA Cambridge National Library of Scotland and University of Bremen only in OCLC. The Union Fire Company of Lancaster Pennsylvania claimed to be the oldest volunteer fire company in the United States. Among its most prominent members were President James Buchanan Declaration of Independence signer George Ross Edward Shippen and William Atlee. The company was credited with implementing many improvements for fire fighting companies including public water pumps street lights and night watchmen. In addition to a constitution this pamphlet contains nine by-laws regarding the requirements roles and committees of its members. Scarce. Not listed in American Imprints or OCLC. 'Lights and Shades of Military Life' is a work of military memoir which can be broken down into two different volumes. The first portion of the work is taken from Count de Vigny's production of the historical 'Cinq-Mars novel' as well as other works of military fiction while the latter part is taken from a publication by M. Elzear Blaze a French captain in Napoleon's army. The editor Lieutenant-General Sir Charles J. Napier adds his own thoughts and life experiences through 'Editor's Remarks' throughout the work. Contents fall under 'Recollections of Military Servitude' 'Recollections of Military Greatness' and 'Military Life in Bivouac Camp Garrison Barracks &c.' Collated complete. Bound in half-calf on marbled boards by Maclaren & Macniven. Externally smart. Some marks to boards as well as edge wear to extremities. Rubbing to raised bands of joints and to leather spine.
