Joseph Hippolyt Pulte 1811-1884 was born in Meschede Westphalia Germany. He was educated in the gymnasium of Sost and received his medical degree at the University of Hamburg. He followed his brother Dr. Hermann Pulte to this country in 1834 and practised in Cherrytown Pennsylvania but became a convert to homoeopathy and took an active interest in forming the homoeopathic academy in Allentown Pennsylvania which was closed in 1840. He then removed to Cincinnati Ohio. In 1844 he founded with others the American Institute of Homoeopathy in New York city and in 1872 he established in Cincinnati the medical college that bears his name where he was professor of the science of clinical medicine. In 1852 he was made professor of the same branch at the Homoeopathic college of Cleveland and he served as professor of obstetrics in 1853-'5. He contributed to various homoeopathic journals was an editor of the "American Magazine of Homoeopathy and Hydropathy" in 1852-'4 and of the "Quarterly Homoeopathic Magazine" in 1854; edited Teste's " Diseases of Children" translated by Emma H. Letter first published in the "British Journal of Homœpathy" April 1846. The author a Scottish physician was one of the earliest British practitioners of homeopathy losing both his position at the Royal Infirmary and most of his practice while also drawing criticism from not just Forbes but many others. Interestingly even Forbes' original article was itself deemed too sympathetic to homeopathy and his Review closed shortly after its publication while the present article raised Henderson in the eyes of the public if not the medical profession DNB. First editions of both these charming chromolithograph advertising pieces for one of the largest patent medicine companies in the United States during the 19th-Century who specialized on using Sarsparilla root from the Honduras to produce their popular drink. Founded in 1879 by Hood d. 1922 Hood & Co. contracted with druggists and retailers across the country selling their mixture of Sarsaparilla root dandelion Mandrake gentian juniper berries and 18% alcohol which claimed to “purify the blood†curing heart diseases dropsy rheumatism scrofula and all without making the patient drowsy. Second edition revised with engraved illustrations added to this informative memoir of an American doctor following his awarding of Harvard M.D. for a thesis on “Syphilis.†From 1844-1845 he traveled through Paris studying Medicine discussing the dissection and anatomy lectures the differences between American and French medical practices during the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe I along with examinations of the different penal systems hospitals and institutions for the Deaf and Dumb Insane Asylums and more. Originally published as serial observations with the Newark Daily Advertiser they were compiled into the author’s original 1848 “Old Wine in New Bottles†this edition was enhanced with steel engravings. Gardner 1821-1876 graduated Harvard in 1844 with his M.D. finished his A.M. by 1852 after returning from France worked as attending physician to the New York City Dispensary then the Lying-In Asylum District and later a Private Hospital in Bloomingdale. He specialized in obstetrics and sexually transmitted diseases was the first to propose clean water public drinking fountains in New york and also was the first to employ chloroform as an anesthetic during childbirth.
