Secondo Garrison-Morton, Portal “improved the obstetric forceps, [and] was a famous teacher in Paris”. Dezeimeris, III/p. 750; Wellcome, IV/p. 418.
First edition, 8vo (215 x 140 mm), [4], viii, 77, [1], 4, 10pp., including two addenda, 'Hydrophobic Syringe' & 'Horse Provender', half-title, one engraved plate 'Hydrophobic Injection', recent morocco-backed patterned paper boards, spine gilt lettered direct. Henry Sully was surgeon to Wiveliscombe Infirmiary and to the Duke of Cumberland. This work records a number of local rabies cases and repeats directions given earlier by Somerset doctors that the effects of rabies can be prevented if the saliva is wiped away and the bite thoroughly washed. Washing the wound with antiseptic is still the first treatment for rabies. The understanding of rabies did not progress until Louis Pasteur published 'Sur la Rage' in 1881. The article on Horse Provender is about Sully's system for feeding horse chaff via a chute from a loft above the stable.

Of them 30 localities in this number all Oligocene localities are situated in France and Germany. Most fossil finds have been described or redescribed in detail; among them one new genus and eight new species have been described. Also fossil remains coming from several localities and not identified below the family level have been briefly described. In addition the taxonomic status of six snake species all 'nomina dubia' described from unknown localities of the Phosphorites du Quercy complex in classical works has been discussed. The final chapter discusses in detail all main events of the history of the European Booidea including Erycinae beginning in the period around the 'Grande Coupure' at the Eocene / Oligocene boundary and ending with the extinction of last boas and pythons that took place in the middle Miocene. The early Oligocene snake fauna was composed of both survivors and newcomers from the East .

Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals PAN paperback

THIS IS CONSIDERED PASTEUR'S GREATEST TRIUMPH Garrison & Morton No. 2541."The central problem in establishing a science of immunology was to discover methods of lowering the pathogenicity of the antigens while preserving their immunogenicity. In the case of smallpox Jenner this was done according to the accepted interpretation by utilizing strains accidentally attenuated through animal passage. In the present paper famous paper the first paper offered Pasteur shows how for a disease of wide distribution among mammals attenuation may be accomplished artificially."Hall "A Source Book in animal Biology" pp. 528 ff."Pasteur revealed the enormous medical and economic potential of experimental biology. He himself developed only one treatment directly applicable to a human disease - his treatment for rabies - but his widely publicized and highly successful efforts on behalf of the germ theory were immediately credited with saving much money and many lives. It is for this reason above all that he was recognized and honored during his lifetime and that his name remains a household word."
