This view is a it unusual as it shows not just the party but has Charles Bierstadt standing in the foreground. Other members pack animals and scenery in the background. Minor wear to left had edge of mount. Very good.Charles Bierstadt was the older brother of the famed landscape painter Albert Bierstadt. At fifteen years of age he began his apprenticeship at cabinetmaking and during his six years of service he spent some time in the study of photography in which in 1856 he and his other brother Edward made numerous trials and experiments which proved successful and then they established themselves in business as photographers. In 1863 Bierstadt moved his business to Niagara Falls New York. He was an expert in stereoscopic views and had in connection with his manufactory a large bazaar where his views and many relics and curios were displayed to advantage. Hirsch 1851-1923 "who headed Chicago's Sinai Congregation for forty-two years and led Reform Judaism into the Progressive movement and down social justice pathways was born in Luxemburg.<br> One of several Jews involved in founding the NAACP Hirsch was married to the daughter of abolitionist rabbi David Einhorn and served in his father-in-law's former pulpit in Baltimore before moving to Louisville Kentucky and then Chicago. He was professor of rabbinical literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago in 1892 active in the Republican Party and editor of several influential Jewish publications" Lawrence Bush in Jewish Currents<br> "Hirsch and his congregants struggled to come to terms with the large number of Jewish immigrants who moved to Chicago after 1880 boosting the Jewish community from about 10000 in 1880 to over 300000 in 1920.For the established Jews represented by Sinai the Jewish 'Ghetto' - the immigrant neighborhood on the city's West Side - appeared to represent a world apart and a sharp contrast to Sinai's radical and inclusive reform agenda: a highly visible expression of Jewish ethnicity and traditional Judaism which Reform Jews associated with isolation discrimination and exclusion." <br> Nevertheless during the 1890s "Hirsch spoke up against the deplorable condition of Jews in the Russian Empire and reached out to West Side residents. His support for workers' rights also won him much support among Jewish immigrants who overwhelmingly belonged to the working class.<br> "Hirsch worked closely with Jane Addams and other members of the Hull House circle. In 1908 Hirsch and Addams were among the co-founders of the NAACP. Hirsch inspired several members of Sinai congregation: Sears and Roebuck president and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald was one of Hirsch's closest associates so was legal scholar Julian Mack who presided over a widely noted juvenile court in Chicago in the first decade of the 20th century. <br> Hannah Solomon was one of the founders of the organized Jewish women's movement in the United States. Joseph Schaffner and Harry Hart were the leading partner of the clothing manufacturer Hart Schaffner & Marx one of Chicago's largest employers. Some largely even browning throughout endpapers a little marked but overall very good. This Japanese scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings from Japanese sources provides a detailed and engaging record of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games capturing the entire event from its earliest stages to its conclusion. The scrapbook begins with profiles of all Japanese athletes participating in the Games followed by reports on the opening ceremony individual sporting events and the triumphs and disappointments experienced by Japan's competitors. <br> <br>It also includes coverage of notable performances by international athletes and closes with accounts of the closing ceremony. The precise newspaper source for these articles is not identified. <br> <br>Each clipping has been neatly and carefully cut and mounted demonstrating the compiler's dedication and care. The scrapbook was assembled by S. Tanaka in December 1965. Wrapped in paper from a bookshop in Fukuoka it suggests that Tanaka may have been a sports enthusiast living in that region motivated to preserve the memories of Japan’s Olympic efforts. <br> <br>Beyond its sporting content the scrapbook offers insights into the Japanese media's portrayal of the Games and national pride during the post-war period. Medina is the capital of the Al-Madinah Region in Saudi Arabia. At the city's heart is al-Masjid an-Nabawi 'The Prophet's Mosque' which is the burial place of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Medina is one of the three holiest cities in Islam the other two being Mecca and Jerusalem. Medina was Muhammad's destination in his Hijrah migration from Makkah and became the capital of a rapidly increasing Muslim Empire under Muhammad's leadership serving as the power base of Islam and where Muhammad's Ummah Community composed of both locals and immigrants from Muhammad's original home of Mecca developed. Medina is home to three prominent mosques namely al-Masjid an-Nabawi Quba Mosque and Masjid al-Qiblatayn 'The mosque of the two Qiblas'. 1801171034滿洲國國務院國都建設局.Manshūkoku Kokumuin Kokuto Kensetsukyoku. Fourth Edition. 康徳4年1937. Large folding double sided single sheet printed on both sides folded in 12 panels. One side features a handsome colour birds-eye view of Shinkyo with a photographic panorama showing construction in progress immediately below on the reverse a coloured plan text and black and white photographic illustrations. 54.5 x 78cm. A little minor wear and occasional browning a very good copy. This striking large coloured bird's-eye view of the city of Shinkyo the Chinese city known today as Changchun was published in this pamphlet explaining the first "five-year" stage of the project for the planning of Shinkyo. Shinkyo was established by the Japanese in the first part of the 20th century the area having been chosen for its strategic importance. It became a city in 1932. The Emperor Puyi lived there until the end of World War II. <br> <br>This attractive birds-eye view of the planned city shows Shinkyo's broad streets trees and attractive buildings. The planning of Shikyo was influenced by the changes that had been made to 19th century Paris by contemporary American town planning and the Garden City Movement. Today Changchun is a city of over 7 million people the capital of China's Jilin Province and known for its car manufacturing. <br> <br>On the reverse of the map two panels upper right section showing a photograph titled 國都新京建設の全貌Kokuto kensetsu no zenbō accompanying an overview of the planning of Shinkyo and the purpose of the city. Two panels in the upper middle section on reverse of the birds-eye view show a coloured plan of the future Shinkyo. It shows the city located within the nearby region and indicates government residential and industrial areas the race course airport railway lines parks etc. A comprehensive list of names of parks avenues plazas and roads is also provided along with the map. One oblong atlas folio hand-coloured lithograph sized 25 x 20.5 in. still retaining fairly wide borders printing below centered image colour-tinted border to image some very minor age toning dustsoiling still an excellent copy preserved in the original quarter-sawn oak wood frame 33.5 x 25.5 in. retaining the original glass newly backed in archival foam core framed w/ archival matting. First edition of this impressive first edition birds-eye view of the buildings and sites Centennial International Exhibition with the fairgrounds set above the Schuykill River. This view depicts the Exposition before it was completed and the Halls featured include the Main Building Machinery Hall Memorial Hall Horticultural Hall and Agricultural Hall. Once the construction was complete Toudy issued another version with fuller buildings as well as some changes to the foreground and center of the image. Toudy fl. 1865-1878 first established with William Toudy his lithography firm at 503-505 Chestnut and later merged with Geroge Wl. Ward & Co. in 1872 lasting less than 2 years. Henry became the sole owner by 1875 and were well known for their atlases maps and city views and he worked on several Stone & Stewart County Atlases from 1866-1877 as well as many of the Mid-Atlantic general surveys. They also managed to outlast a lawsuit over a print based on the drawing by Hermann Schwarzmann architect of the Centennial grounds entitled “Bird’s Eye View†after copyrighting this image in 1875. First edition variant issue of this scarce birds-eye view of the buildings and sites at the first World’s Fair in the United States celebrating the Centennial. This depicts the trees grass shrubs pedestrians horse-drawn carriages and walking paths with labels below for the Horticultural Hall Main Exhibition Building Memorial Hall Agricultural Hall Ladies Pavilion Machinery Hall and others. These beautiful birds-eye views were presented to subscribers of the “Centennial History†by sales agents who were also sent extra circulars and liberal commissions as indicated in the margins. These were apparently issued in different sizes and formats with the Huntington hand-coloured copy containing all the text including the imprint at the lower fore-edge and both the Huntington and American Antiquarian Society copies have smaller margins. Bourquin 1808-1897 was a Swiss-American pioneering Philadelphia lithographer who specialized in county maps and atlases but also was known for his innovative lithography and by 1876 maintained between 6 and 20 skilled lithographers to produce portraits and prints. First edition of this uncommon folding souvenir postcard celebrating the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition featuring and reproducing the famed Caughey birds-eye. The birds-eye depicts the Guild’s Lake area of the grounds up and operating now bounded by Reed to Thurston Streets and 31st to 24th Streets in NW Portland. Prof. Willson fl. 1904-1920 began as a dance instructor with the Academy of Dancing located in the Hirsch Building but within a few years of the Exposition set up his own dance studio and was noted instructor of Waltzes. This card advertises the fact that couples could dance for .50¢ while an “Extra Lady†for .25¢ and even better for men in the very hot and humid Portland Pavilion they could dance without their coats in Shirt Waists. Caughey 1851-1925 was an Ohio Civil War veteran an itinerant chalk plate artist and had just created the year before in Feb. 1904 a Birds-Eye view reproduced over two pages in the Lewis and Clark Journal with noted birds-eye artist and cartographer Fred Routledge 1871-1936. Caughey began producing birds eye views in and around Portsmouth NH in the 1880’s and eventually became a commercial artist and newspaper editor in Portland Oregon where he would often produce images for the Mutual Label & Lithographic Co.
