2007200972Dordrecht / London: Springer 2007. Hardcover. Good DJ is edgeworn/scuffed/foxed; boards are lightly edgeworn; interior is in excellent condition. Blue DJ with yellow lettering; blue boards and gilt lettering; xix 442 pp.; richly illustrated. This volume owes its origin to the perception of a puzzling paradox. Hans Christian Orsted the great Danish scientist and philosopher was one of the founders of modern physics through his experimental discovery in 1820 of the interaction of electricity and magnetism--a key step and model for the further unification of the forces of nature. Followers such as Maxwell and Einstein were and today searchers worldwide are enchanted by the hope for a completion of that grand program. In addition to Orsted's discovery of electromagnetism his work in science included other fields chiefly high-pressure physics and acoustics. Moreover he belonged to that fascinating group of seekers who were deeply engaged in the Romantic tradition of the Nature Philosophers influenced by Immanuel Kant and by religious literary and aesthetic currents. The scientific and philosophical speculations by Orsted and his circle also quickly stimulated the imagination of other philosophers and scientists. Among the latter were prominently Andre-Marie Ampere and Michael Faraday whose work launched the transformation of civilization often called the Second Ind- trial Revolution based on the invention of motors generators and the pervasiveness of electricity in modern life. -- WorldCat. In the midst of this current interest and with the chance to mark the occasion of the bicentenary of the first edition of the Essay on Population 1798 the contributors to this volume take this timely opportunity to examine the historical conditions in which Malthus constructed his theory and in which the concept of a ‘Malthusian' and ‘Neo-Malthusian' philosophy first emerged. The essays redress the balance between Malthus's original argument the immediate responses to Malthus by medics and theologians in Britain and on the Continent and some of the ways that his ideas were later attacked appropriated or misrepresented. Included here are essays that not only re-evaluate the development of Malthus's theory but also offer critical perspectives on the generation of the ‘Malthusian league' and debates about birth control in Britain and on the Continent and Malthus's influence on the emergence of social science and Darwinian evolutionary biology. A9780295993201Hardback. New. Robert Brain traces the origins of artistic modernism to specific technologies of perception developed in late-nineteenth-century laboratories. Brain argues that the thriving fin-de-siecle field of "physiological aesthetics" which sought physiological explanations for the capacity to appreciate beauty and art changed the way poets artists and musicians worked and brought a dramatic transformation to the idea of art itself. hardcover
