The prophets in Thom's bible are historians scientists and philosophers. He identifies the discoveries of systems and information theory early in the 20th century as the last stage in the emancipation of science from theology and examines the implications of that distinction for the concepts of faith and truth. The story he tells is the natural history of intelligence as well as the justification for his faith in intelligence. -- Contents: Introduction: The Road to Rational Faith; I In the Beginning: The Origins and Evolution of Intelligence 1 The Right Choice: Nature's Discovery of Purpose and Intelligence 2 Nature of Biological Control Systems 3 Memories & Emergence of Intelligence 4 Types of Intelligence Bodily Coordination Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence; Spatial & Conceptual Intelligence Organization of Information; Logical-mathematical & Intrapersonal & Interpersonal intelligence; Social Awareness as a Tool of Intelligence 5 Evolution of Intelligence Becomes a Social Story 6 Development of Human Intelligence 7 "Thought Contagion" the Social Version of the "Tropism for Truth" 8 Evolution of Social Organization 9 Intelligent Social Responsibility Intelligence as a Source of Social Imperatives; Advantages of Personal Relationships; Emotional Side Effects of Personal Encounters; Status as a Motive for Socially Responsible Behavior; Benefits of Membership; Functional Advantages of Social Arrangements; Advantages of Cooperative Activities; Religious Beliefs that Mandate Altruistic Behavior; Intentional Maliciousness: The Other Side of Altruism 10 Families Tribes and the Church and State A New World of Human Organizations and Ideologies; Creative Role of Social Organizations; Religion: One of the First Social Inventions; Dark Side of Social Organizations; Human Species Has Created Its Own "Frankensteins"; Religious and Political Leaders As Surrogates for Natural Selection 11 Social Changes that Emerged with the Growth of the Population 12 Civilization and the Evolution of Intelligence Social Barriers to Intellectual Progress; Special Role of Religion in Intellectual Development; Origins of Monotheism; Two Streams of Intellectual Progress II Natural Progress of Intelligence 13 Birth of Philosophy and the Beginnings of Science Role of Inconsistencies and Anomalies in Intellectual Progress; Identification Intellectual Progress 14 Critical Concepts and Intellectual Progress Animate and Inanimate Objects; Nature of Inanimate Objects; Nature and Structure of the Earth; Earth Sciences; Evolution: The Emancipation of the Biological Sciences from Divine Intervention; Systems Theory: New Theories of Organization and Control III Struggle Against Barriers to Intellectual Progress 15 Christianity Opens the Door to Political and Intellectual Freedom 16 Individualism: A Breakthrough in the Evolution of Intelligence Intellectuals Look at God; A Cynic Looks at Politics; Role of Individualism in Economic Theory; Who Should Pilot the Evolutionary Airplane 17 Rulers of the Sovereign States Dominate the Modern World 18 Concepts of Democracy and Free Markets Became Contagious Colonization and Imperialism as Cultural and Economic Forces; Reaction Against the Controls of Mercantilism; Story of "The Long Nineteenth Century"; Industrial Revolution and the Rise of Modern Capitalism; Rise of Socialism and Communism; New Imperialism; How World War I Changed the World 19 Emergence of Liberal Principles as National Guidelines; Index; Endnotes

Xlibris hardcover

He has recorded three discs with the musician Elliott Sharp: Revenge of the Stuttering Child Poverty Line and A Short History of Vodka. From a review by Eric Maroney posted on line: The Fire Stays Red Hebrew poet Ronny Someck's first collection of English translations and here in a bi-lingual edition is a powerful example of the range and nuance capable in modern Israeli Hebrew. Someck an Israeli of Iraqi descent sprinkles his poems with Arabic words and transliterates English words with Hebrew inflections and endings illustrating just how international and mature a language Hebrew has become; it can absorb the words of other cultures while maintaining its own staunch and vibrant Hebrew identity. Someck's poems are a wide ranging study on the Israeli predicament but also encompass other subjects like the erotic with a distinctly Israeli touch in `Niva' where `Once I saw her take off her blouse. Her tan bra was the color of a shack in a transit camp for immigrants' to the humorous `Poem of Longing' where `I long for Grandpa's acrobatics / as he leapt / from one sidewalk/ to another.' Someck's Hebrew is vernacular crisp and slangy. Yet like many Hebrew poets he can't fully escape biblical allusion and this is shown in the last poem `Red Catalog of the Word Sunset.' Here a French poet sees red and compares it to `burgundy from a cloud of grapes" an English poet to a rose but the Hebrew poet to blood. Someck's is a country "fastening cannibal lips/ to the setting sun's virginal throat.' The poet's arms are `oars of fear' which `row like Noah to Ararat."
