This was one of the most successful and influential of the 18th-century architectural pattern books and was extremely successful in popularizing the Adam style of ornamentation. This is the first of Pain's books to express the influence of Robert Adam. It was reprinted in Boston in 1792. This and Pain s other works served as design sources not only for architects and builders but also for cabinetmakers and carvers. Pain wrote many pattern-books which disseminated the Adam style. He was the father of James George Richard and Henry Pain all pupils of Nash. James 1779-1877 and George Richard 1793-1838 assisted for a time by Henry became successful architects and builders in Ireland. COLVIN.1995. Contemporary blind panelled reverse calf with some marks and signs of use. There is a 1 cm worm track at the head of the spine near the lower joint. Internally occasional signs of handling but the contents are crisp and tight. Signatures of Stranrawer 20 Decr. 1793 / Arthr. Paterson on the front pastedown and W. Leggat on the front endpaper. Paterson has also left his signature on the rear pastedown. The rear endpaper removed. Calculations and sketches on both pastedowns. First edition. This popular work went through 7 editions including one printed in Boston in 1792. A very sound copy in untouched condition. London: Printed for I.
