La tesi fondamentale discussa nel libro punta sulla estensione dell'attenzione della psichiatria dal rapporto diatico tipico del trattamento terapeutico tradizionale, al coinvolgimento del più vasto ambiente sociale in cui avviene l'interazione terapeutica stessa. Chiave di questo procedere è l'apprendimento sociale, che, negli intendimenti di Jones dovrebbe neutralizzare il concetto di ospedale psichiatrico tradizionale, con tutti i suoi addentellati. Il problema centrale della condizione ospedaliera consiste nell'organizzazione di una struttura sociale che permetta soluzioni dinamiche dei problemi quotidiani. La prima comunità terapeutica fu creata nel 1952, in Inghilterra, dallo psichiatra Maxwell Jones, con l'obiettivo di far partecipare i pazienti, e quindi responsabilizzarli, nella gestione dell'istituzione psichiatrica in cui erano ospitati. L'idea era quella di trasformare una rigida organizzazione gerarchica, in cui i rapporti erano di tipo “verticale”, in una organizzazione “orizzontale” con un rapporto paritario fra gli utenti e gli operatori sanitari. br. Negli ultimi anni in Italia è aumentato in modo esponenziale l'interesse nei confronti degli animali che collaborano in ambito sanitario e assistenziale. Un'attenzione che coinvolge i professionisti del settore, gli accademici, l'opinione pubblica e i media. In particolare suscita curiosità il rapporto tra animale e bambino nel contesto ospedaliero, un legame che alimenta emozioni e per questo viene utilizzato sempre più a livello di promozione e di comunicazione. Gli interventi assistiti con gli animali (IAA), maggiormente sviluppati in altri paesi europei e oltre oceano, in Italia sono stati solo recentemente regolamentati. Esistono però esperienze attive e proficue in luoghi eterogenei che stanno scrivendo la storia di questa materia nel nostro paese. Questo volume per la prima volta intende analizzare, anche grazie ad alcuni casi clinici, gli Interventi assistiti con gli animali in ambito pediatrico, mostrandone le potenzialità ed evidenziando come questo particolare percorso di cura debba essere inquadrato in una complessità che vede coinvolti più attori. Analizzando l'importanza della relazione bambino-animale, fondamentale nel processo di cura in ambito ospedaliero sia nella sua dimensione clinica che psicologica, saranno evidenziate le esperienze nei vari reparti, dal pronto soccorso agli ambulatori, dalla rianimazione all'oncoematologia. Sarà mostrata la necessità della formazione e della rielaborazione del processo di apprendimento e di supervisione dell'équipe specializzata in IAA, soffermandosi poi sugli aspetti educativi-comportamentali degli animali, nonché sui protocolli igienico-sanitari, indispensabili premesse per l'applicazione e il monitoraggio degli interventi. Infine verrà presentato il punto sugli effetti degli IAA in ambito pediatrico, lo stato della ricerca e gli aspetti bioetici in un campo così innovativo nell'umanizzazione delle cure sui quali è necessario riflettere.
