Coniato nel Settecento e divenuto un concetto chiave della psicopatologia, il termine "nevrosi" fu approfondito dagli studi di Charcot e dalla psicoanalisi di Freud e, nella classificazione qui presentata da Frankl, include un ampio spettro di disturbi, diversi per eziologia e sintomi. Come possibilità di trattamento psicoterapeutico delle nevrosi, Frankl propone la logoterapia: concepita come cura medica dell'anima, si appella alla capacità spirituale del paziente di autodistanziarsi dal suo disturbo mentale per sostenere un'esistenza che abbia pienezza di senso, e permette di affrontare la sofferenza senza perdere la dignità e la speranza. La logoterapia frankliana, praticabile soltanto in combinazione con altre metodologie terapeutiche, si rivela in linea con gli sviluppi più recenti della psicoterapia che si muove in un'ottica di integrazione dei saperi. Il volume Teoria e terapia delle nevrosi, compimento e riepilogo del pensiero di Frankl, mantiene così intatto il proprio valore a distanza di anni dalla prima pubblicazione.
