Realizó trabajos vinculados con el pasado histórico y literario de Cuba. Conformó una de las bibliotecas más completas sobre asuntos nacionales en aquellos momentos. Cursó sus primeros estudios en La Habana y en 1870 se graduó de Licenciado en Derecho Civil en la Universidad de La Habana. Sus principales aportes estuvieron dirigidos a la publicación de artículos histórico-jurídicos en las principales publicaciones periódicas de su etapa.Entre 1881-1883 llegó a ocupar el cargo de Abogado Fiscal Sustituto de la >Audiencia de La Habana. Fue también fundador del Colegio de Abogados de La Habana donde se desempeñó como Secretario Contador y perteneció a la Junta Clasificadora del gremio de abogados. Con posterioridad ocupó diversos cargos jurídicos en La Habana y Matanzas. En 1897 el >Gobierno Interventor lo designó Jefe de los Archivos de Cuba y fundó el Boletín de dicha institución.Fue promotor de importantes ediciones como fue el Tomo VI de la Historia General de la Esclavitud de >José Antonio Saco. Conformó una de las bibliotecas más completas sobre asuntos nacionales en aquellos momentos. Publicó importantes trabajos históricos como: Hombres del 68 y Nociones de Historia de Cuba .
