1948509163Dutton 1948. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. NEAR FINE/NEAR FINE. First Printing. SIGNED on title and subsequently INSCRIBED by Gore Vidal on FFEP to his personal friends Stathis Orphanos and Ralph Sylvester: 'For Stathis and Ralph.' Stathis was a noted photographer and shot Vidal on multiple occasions including the portrait used on the cover of his memoir. Stathis and Ralph also operated the Los Angeles fine-press publishing firm 'Sylvester and Orphanos' which published Vidal's Sex is Politics. 314pp. Black buckram gilt spine lettering blindstamp to front cover. Some trivial toning to pages and endpapers otherwise very clean and sharp; Dust jacket has some light rubbing to extremities and a very small chip to head of spine. Vidal's third novel The City and the Pillar is recognized as the first post-war novel to portray an openly gay protagonist whose homosexuality is treated as natural and appropriate. The novel met with some scandal: in his autobiography Vidal notes that the New York Times refused an advertisement for the book and that for a period of six years following no major newspaper or periodical would review his work. He quotes an editor at Dutton as saying 'You will never be forgiven for this book. Twenty years from now you will still be attacked for it.' Vidal also notes private enthusiasm expressed by his LA friends and fellow Gay writers Christopher Isherwood Thomas Mann and Steven Spender. While Spender averred that the novel was essentially autobiographical Vidal denied it. Dutton hardcover

"As a novelist Vidal explored the nature of corruption in public and private life. His style of narration evoked the time and place of his stories and delineated his characters' psychology. His third novel The City and the Pillar 1948 about a dispassionately presented male homosexual relationship offended conservative book reviewers' literary political and moral sensibilities." from Wikipedia; 314p. pages; Pictured 4/6/26; Signed by Author . The gilt decoration and titling to the spine has dulled slightly more-so the publisher's logo at the foot of the spine. Some toning to the text-block and outer page edges due to the quality of paper stock used. Free from inscriptions. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition with some fading of colouring to the lower spine portion. Mild edge-wear with a little loss at the upper spine and a few nicks. Mild rubbing and creasing in places to the edges. The B.Biro wrapper artwork looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed without dedication by the author to the title page. A very scarce early title from the acclaimed author. 'In 1948 Mr. Vidal published 'The City and the Pillar' which was dedicated to J. T. Jimmie Trimble. It is what would now be called a coming-out story about a handsome athletic young Virginia man who gradually discovers that he is homosexual. By today s standards it is tame and discreet but at the time it caused a scandal and was denounced as corrupt and pornographic. Mr. Vidal later claimed that the literary and critical establishment The New York Times especially had blacklisted him because of the book and he may have been right. He had such trouble getting subsequent novels reviewed that he turned to writing mysteries under the pseudonym Edgar Box and then for a time gave up novel-writing altogether. To make a living he concentrated on writing for television then for the stage and the movies NY Times August 12th 2012. Collectible. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Spine a bit faded and dulled.

Vidal's third novel which shocked the public with its direct and unadorned examination of a homosexual main character

Vidal 1925-2012 in this novel used what he called a "flat gray naturalistic style." The novel became a sensation but received generally negative reviews. In 1974 he explained to The Paris Review that "Tactically if not aesthetically this was for a good reason. Up until then homosexuality in literature was always exotic…. I wanted to deal with an absolutely ordinary all-American lower-middle-class young man and his world. To show the dead-on “normality†of the homosexual experience. John Lehmann hardcover
