Sisco fu uno dei più importanti chirurghi italiani del XIX° secolo. Primo chirurgo del Papa, allorché Pio VII negli ultimi mesi del 1815 istituitì la clinica medica e chirurgica nell'ospedale di San Giacomo. Nel 1829 sarà il primo in Italia a far l'allacciamento della carotide primitiva. Dal 1816 al 1829 pubblicò i "Saggi dell'Istituto romano di Medicina esterna" di cui fa parte anche quest'opera. I "Saggi" erano praticamente i resconti dell'attività chirurgica del Sisco anno per anno. In essi l'autore prendeva in considerazione i casi più strani ed eclatanti affrontati, descrivendo i pazienti e le tecniche chirurgiche usate.
