brossura La lotta del gene è proprio quella della genetica per affermare il proprio oggetto, ma è la stessa dialettica delle definizioni confliggenti di gene nella storia della sua evoluzione semantica. Definizioni che, in ultima analisi, possono essere ridotte a due grandi gruppi: uno ne privilegia il significato come entità materiale, operazionale, strumentale e discreta situata sui cromosomi; l'altro la forma astratta, teorica, qualcosa su cui noi facciamo inferenze, ma che non possiamo sperimentare direttamente (Johannsen). Nella storia è sempre la stessa lotta che ritorna: entità astratta ed entità concreta, un certo «idealismo» e un certo «empirismo». Sia le definizioni più astratte che quelle più concrete risultano però incomplete, o complete solo per certi ambiti di studi, e «il gene oggi significa cose diverse in contesti differenti» (Carlson). Parliamo tuttavia sempre di concetti in divenire, in evoluzione, e avvalendoci di immagini come il caleidoscopio, e dei concetti di «struttura» e «norma di reazione», tentiamo di dipanarne la polisemanticità.
