"L'universo è una struttura unitaria vivente". Il significato di questa affermazione viene precisato ed i suoi limiti discussi. Le basi di questa idea sono state poste da Alexander von Humboldt (che per primo ha concepito la rete della vita, formulata in "Cosmos", 1834) e da James Lovelock che nel 1972 ha proposto l'unità vivente della Terra ("Gaia, un nuovo sguardo alla Vita sulla Terra"). Il concetto di Universo come unità vivente è strettamente legato al Principio dell'Osservatore, che è colui che sa cosa è la Vita e cosa è la Terra nella sua struttura unitaria, e chi è lui stesso. L'Osservatore in realtà sono gli Esseri Umani, me compreso. Per capire che senso ha che un organismo di questo Pianeta formuli un concetto di questo tipo va, in breve e con un po' di distacco, considerato anche lui. Il discorso inizia esaminando l'unità dell'Universo ed il concetto di Vita, cercando i punti di contatto tra i due argomenti e le proprietà che in Universo e Vita coincidono; o almeno si avvicinano. Il sottotitolo di questa prima parte è "Il sesso degli angeli", a sottolineare la fragilità della logica dell'argomento e, per quanto mi riguarda, il suo interesse di confine tra fisica e metafisica. Il discorso prosegue poi occupandosi della Genetica della brava persona, ad indicare che la specie umana ha come carattere genetico intrinseco, come proprietà dirimente, alcune caratteristiche che lo portano da un lato alla socialità, dall'altro alla elaborazione del pensiero astratto. Poiché la vita e le condizioni che la permettono e la mantengono sono tutto fuorché astratte ed evanescenti, vengono esaminate le ultime tappe della evoluzione umana ripercorrendo i cambiamenti che hanno permesso, e causato, di essere quello che siamo e di pensare in modo ampio. Di questa straordinaria realtà e della unicità di questo processo evolutivo non ci si rende in genere ben conto. Vengono ricordate alcune tappe evolutive del pensiero umano che riguardano in modo particolare i limiti che separano fisica e metafisica. Tra le quali: la poetica di Esiodo ed il pensiero degli Stoici e dei Pitagorici, coloro che erano giunti alla convinzione che l'unica categoria della mente umana in grado di capire la natura ed il Logos che regge e guida l'Universo è la matematica. Da qui nasce la scienza e la capacità di spingere il pensiero fino ai confini dell'Universo, e di sentirci parte di esso. Autori: Ernesto Di Mauro.
