015104Jean-Baptiste Louvet de Couvray (1760-1797), écrivain, homme politique, auteur desAmours du chevalier de Faublas,mort de la tuberculose.Manuscrit autographe, sd [5 nivôse an 5 i.e. 25 décembre 1796], 2p in-4.Brouillon d'une intéressante lettre de défense, adresséeà l'accusateur public du département de l'Yonne. On lui faisait, semble-t-il, le reproche d'avoir recommandé un certainJean Courier, membre de la commission des passeports de la ville de Paris puis employé du Comité de Salut public au mouvement des armées de terre.En effet, ce Jean Courier avait été arrêté à Joigny sans passeport. Il fut donc traduit devant le tribunal militaire de l'Yonne «en pluviose an V». Il avait usé du nom de représentant du peupleClaude Blad (1764-1802)pour se faire héberger du 30 septembre au 11 octobre 1796 chez un menuisier et signer une pétition de ce menuisier. Il se trouve que quelques années plus tôt, sous la Terreur, la femme de Louvet n'avait dû son salut que grâce à un passeport signé de Courier.Dans ce courrier, après avoir dit que si Courier est coupable, il doit être puni, il explique longuement pourquoi et comment il a recommandé Courier, comment ils se sont retrouvés lors d'une représentation du ballet de Psyché, comment il a obtenu la recommandation en se prétendant ami de plusieurs députés et notamment deMerlin de Thionville, absent au moment de la visite de Courier. Il signale aussi qu'au 9 thermidor, il n'a pas été accusé et qu'il avait alors été employé au comité de salut public, dont Louvet avait fait partie.Provenance :Georges Cain (1853-1819), peintre, conservateur du Musée Carnavalet. Il l'avait communiqué, avec un autre document de Louvet, au moment de la publication desAmours du chevalier de Faublaschez Michaud en 1911. Le brouillon est retranscrit (p.294-295) et reproduit en fac-simile (p.296-297). En revanche, il n'avait pas été remis dans son contexte ni daté.Notre brouillon correspond aux deux tiers de la lettre envoyée effectivement par Louvet le 5 nivôse. Cette dernière est conservée par les archives départementales de l'Yonne dans la liasse L.1215. C'est cette lettre qui nous a permis de dater plus précisément notre brouillon que nous pensions légèrement plus récent (janvier ou début février).Très beau document, peu de temps avant sa mort.[370]
