vii, [3], 477 pages. Index. "Examines women as a social problem, as the puppet of a sex urge infinitely more powerful than that of man, as a virgin, as a wife, as an adultress, as a widow, as a spinster, as a mother, as a prostitute, as a lesbian, as a worker in industry, and as a professional figure. His conclusions are the more convincing because of the thorough study of feminine glandular make-up and the social history of woman which precedes his discussion of modern woman's place in society." - dust jacket. Some creasing to wraps. Minor wear to corners of front wraps. ; At once daring and authoritative, this book offers a profusely illustrated history of sexual politics in ancient Athens. The phallus was pictured everywhere in ancient Athens: painted on vases, sculpted in marble, held aloft in gigantic form in public processions, and shown in stage comedies. This obsession with the phallus dominated almost every aspect of public life, influencing law, myth, and customs, affecting family life, the status of women, even foreign policy. This is the first book to draw together all the elements that made up the "reign of the phallus"—men's blatant claim to general dominance, the myths of rape and conquest of women, and the reduction of sex to a game of dominance and submission, both of women by men and of men by men. In her elegant and lucid text Eva Keuls not only examines the ideology and practices that underlay the reign of the phallus, but also uncovers an intense counter-movement—the earliest expressions of feminism and antimilitarism. Complementing the text are 345 reproductions of Athenian vase paintings. Some have been reproduced in a larger format and gathered in an appendix for easy reference and closer study. These revealing illustrations are a vivid demonstration that classical Athens was more sexually polarized and repressive of women than any other culture in Western history. ; 477 pages

First edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo. 8 pages; 23 cm. Rabbi Emanuel Sternheim was a progressive rabbi, born and ordained in London. Influenced by the young Stephen S. Wise, rabbi of the Free Synagogue of New York, who had come to London to address the Jewish Religious Union, he decided to emigrate to the United States in 1911. Although less politically active and influential, Sternheim shared Wises philosophy of social action and progressivism. Sternheims first American pulpit was in Greenville, Mississippi (in 1913) , and in the following year he received a call from Temple Bnai Israel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He served as president of the Louisiana Social Hygiene Association, taking a leading role in the sex hygiene movement, which attempted to change attitudes toward sex by endeavoring to influence the social environment through education and legislation (American Jewish Historical Quarterly Vol.64, No. 4, page 358) . As I conceive an invitation to preach a Baccalaureate sermon to a member of my faith, it is an invitation to deal with religion in its broadest aspects. You will not expect from me, and I shall certainly make no attempt to give you, a doctrinal exposition of dogmatic religion. I am going to make an attempt to bring you a conception of the outcome of the period of passionate protest in which we are living, a period that is going to sharply and for all time end the narrower conception of religion which has hitherto prevailed. This is perhaps an optimistic viewpoint, for every age has approached the great question of universal religion in its own way, and succeeding ages have rejected the viewpoint of the preceding ones.
