Il s’agit peut-être de l’ouvrage qui, dans l’histoire récente, a eu la plus grande influence sur notre mode de vie. Les thèses qui y sont développées sont, de nos jours encore, sujettes à de vives polémiques dans tout le monde occidental. Les auteurs étudient les pratiques, les orientations et les préférences sexuelles en remettant en cause toutes les normes que la morale et la science avaient jusqu’alors considérées comme la nature de l’homme. Un relativisme qui traite la fidélité conjugale ou l’hétérosexualité comme des pratiques parmi d’autres plutôt que comme une norme incontestable. Les réactions que cet ouvrage suscita dans l’Amérique des années 50 contribua à sa vaste diffusion dans de nombreuses langues et à en faire la base scientifique de tous les mouvements de libération sexuelle et de défense des minorités sexuelles jusqu’à nos jours.Usure aux bords et insolation aux dos des jaquettes, manque de papier à un angle de la jaquette du premier tome, sinon beaux exemplaires.
