Maoheny's festschrift for Paul Oskar Kristeller has an article on Leonicerno's influence on humanist medical education. It would be hard to find a Sixteenth Century medical doctor or student of medicine who did not carry this small book with him. Bound in brown cloth green spine label. Cloth worn through corners and edges of boards spine label chipped one tiny worm hole through all lower margins not affecting any text. Small contemporary owner's name in brown ink. The first two leaves with old backed tiny wormholes otherwise only evenly minimally browned altogether of the very freshest astonishingly good condition - one would almost like to say "hot off the press" for there are also no ownership notes no entries of any kind. -- The remarkably beautiful binding from the end of the 16th century shows a beautiful virtue scroll with the female allegories of "SPES" "FIDES" "CARITAS" "PRUDENTIA" on the front cover. First Greek-Latin edition of the extensively annotated works of the Greek physician Hippocrates of Kos c. 460-370 B.C. whose teachings were still of indispensable value for the early modern era which is the reason for the high esteem with which the editors treated his work and - here for the first time - made it available to a broad public through the Latin-Greek edition. Hippocrates thus stands at the beginning of scientific human medicine which could then only be completely rethought at the end of the 19th century with the groundbreaking inventions. It was printed as part of the series of da Forlì's works which also included his commentaries on Galen and Avicenna. The Aphorisms translated into Latin by two Humanist scholars Theodorus Gaza and Nicoll Leoniceno represent "those remarkable clinical jottings Garrison and precise clinical observations with the diagnoses and prognoses for various diseases. Some of the diseases are described here for the first time such as chronic renal disease and many of the accounts are still valid. Folio 33 cm; 10 191 1 blank leaves.
