Debut issue of the SFL newsletter/magazine.<br /> <br /> According to the Online Archive of California Bancroft: "The Sexual Freedom League was founded in 1963 in New York City. Julian Beck Allen Ginsberg and Dr. Leo Koch were among those on the Advisory Committee of the original group which was active in demonstrations for a wide range of causes."<br /> <br /> The original SFL was formed in NYC by Jefferson Poland in 1963 as New York City League for Sexual Freedom. When Poland moved to the Bay Area from NYC in 1966 he founded the SFL in the East Bay which was a loose-knit group with few rules little organization and no fees. After he split several others stepped in to create their own versions of the league including Richard Thorne Margo Rila and her husband Frank Esposito Rila. By 1971 several SFL chapters had formed around the US including the one Don Jackson was a member of. Jackson whose copy this is was a gay activist in Southern California who contributed to The Alpine County Project aka Stonewall Nation. In a letter responding to internal strife over Liberal and Conservative leaders in the SFL Jackson a Libertarian offered himself as a Liberal candidate for office. The San Francisco chapter was headed up by Margo St. James at this time. Sexual Freedom League SF unknown

In limp vellum titled in manuscript on spine; lace strips exposed; spine lining old manuscript on vellum exposed. Small holes in first and last blanks and inner margin of preliminary leaves. Some dampstaining on last 6 leaves otherwise a beautiful large wide-margined clean copy . The whole protected in custom built sturdy clamshell case with faux roundback spine covered in brown calf and titled in gilt. Armorial bookplate of John Aitken with motto "in cruces salus." References: Durling 2565; Camerini 522; Adams J37. <br /><br />The definitive Giunta edition of the best-known work by Hippocrates 460-370 BCE. Edited with commentary by Giacomo or Jacopo da Forlì d. 1414 this enlarged improved version is the best edition of the Aphorisms published up to that point Camerini. It was printed as part of the series of da Forlì's works which also included his commentaries on Galen and Avicenna. The Aphorisms translated into Latin by two Humanist scholars Theodorus Gaza and Nicoll Leoniceno represent "those remarkable clinical jottings Garrison and precise clinical observations with the diagnoses and prognoses for various diseases. Some of the diseases are described here for the first time such as chronic renal disease and many of the accounts are still valid. Giunta hardcover

Smaller paper label with ink numbering at base of spine. Chipping at head of spine with head band coming loose. Boards show moderate wear and scuffing with rubbing along joints and edges exposed board at fore corners and scattered stains to covers. Text block is age toned and worn along edges with dust soiling and a small ink stain to the top edge. Lightly age toned and sparsely foxed throughout with scattered faint pencil marginalia in the early sections of the book. Faint penciling and contemporary ownership inscription on front endpaper.
