Towle was one of the "inventors living in the Town of Dixfield during its early history."<br /> Towle offers a little rhyme to sell his invention: "One cent a day will kill the cold / In comfort pay a hundred fold; / 'Twill keep you warm-- prevent the chills / And save from paying Doctor's bills! . . . 10697Ministry of Munitions Princes Street Westminster London SW 4 and 7 Oct. 1915. Total 3pp. folio fold marks good condition. He asks the Scretary of the RSA to "draw the attention" of members to "to the fact that the Munitions Inventions Department which . was recently constituted by the Minister of Munitions for the purpose of dealing with ideas suggestions and inventions for appliances in connection with the prosecution of warfare on land has been authorised by him to receive projects of this nature ." A panel is considering many ideas and would welcome more "suggestions with regard to simplification and improvements whether in the manufacture or in the materials of existing munitions or indeed in any other regard". The second letter is a response to the Secretary's undertaking "to print the substance of his letter in their Journal this week." Note: Little has been written on this "one of the most successful of several wartime Government advisory bodies" see 'Social Studies of Science' Vol. 13 No. 4 Nov. 1983 . Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. He is 'greatly disappointed' that 'having gone to the expense of building the Hall of Inventions & Science' 'the five Learned Societies' that 'induced' him 'to make that addition to the Library have taken no effectual means to make it available for the purpose intended'. Brown 'promised £100 towards the fittings' and is sending a cheque for that amount. Continues: 'I clearly see you will do no good unless you have one or two active gentlemen amongst you who will raise the ways & means to do what is necessary & a much more active Chairman than myself.' He is 'quite discouraged & disappointed that no efficient steps have yet been taken to make it useful'. TWO. Printed pamphlet. Full title: 'Liverpool Gallery of Inventions and Science. Fifth Annual Report of the Committee and Proceedings of the Aggregate Meeting of the Four Societies held on the 7th November 1865.' 10 pp 8vo. Stitched; in pink printed wraps. Text clear and complete. Internally good in discoloured wraps with slight damp-staining at foot. Title-page on front wrap is p.1 with the text comprising pp.3-10. The report is signed in type p.10 'JOHN ABRAHAM Chairman.' It ends: 'It was moved by Mr. JOHN NICOL and carried unanimously: - "That a vote of thanks be passed to the Chairman Mr. JOHN ABRAHAM."' Largely concerning a dispute between the Gallery and the Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society; with transcripts of several letters by the Society's Honorary Secretary Cuthbert Collingwood. Weston's method for improving cultivation in vines and several articles on agricultural matters. Parmentier's article on Tinctures and Medicated wines is in the material reprinted from other societies as are several articles on platina agricultural improvements and papers on the preparation and use of several chemicals.
