Originally published in 1844 this work of speculative natural history and philosophy brought together various theories of stellar evolution with the progressive transmutation of species in an accessible narrative which tied together numerous scientific theories of the age. It was initially well received by polite Victorian society and became an international bestseller but its unorthodox themes contradicted the natural theology fashionable at the time and were reviled by clergyman and subsequently by scientists who readily found fault with its amateurish deficiencies. 'Vestiges' caused a shift in public opinion which - so Charles Darwin believed - prepared the public mind for the scientific theories of evolution by natural selection which followed from the publication of 'On the Origin of Species' in 1859. Condition notes: Boards grubby and bumped with the spine strip split for a few millimetres top and bottom and the strip itself with damage to the edges. Binding firm. Pages clean with no foxing. Previous owner's label to front pastedown a later owner's name and date at the top of that same page and a pencil note I think by the binder or bookseller on the same page apparently noting his customer's name. Trowbridge's name signed in blue pencil on front cover but autograph unverfied; possibly simply an attribution of authorship by a former reader. John Trowbridge 1843-1923 long-time professor of Physics at Harvard was a pioneer in developing laboratory techniques for research in physics; in his 1925 memorial of Trowbridge Theodore Lyman wrote: "The earlier part of the long period during which Professor Trowbridge was a member of the teaching staff of Harvard was characterized by the development of laboratory methods in teaching.Keenly alive to the lack of adequate facilities for the advancement of his chosen field along these lines at Harvard Trowbridge projected a great physical laboratory and found the means to construct it. When the laboratory was begun models for such a building were altogether lacking in this country." Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Science v.60 no. 14 p.651 ff.<br /> <br /> The facility Trowbridge constructed would be named the Jefferson Physical Laboratory: it was the first building in the Western Hemisphere dedicated solely to the physical sciences and is still a Harvard landmark. This pamphlet describing the design construction and funding of the laboratory appears to be uncommon; OCLC notes only 5 physical locations most in Massachusetts; no other copies seen in commerce 2018. Provenance: Henri Milne Edwards Library of Henry and Virginia Walton Harry and Virginia Walton were lifelong residents of Covington Virginia a small town in the Allegheny Mountains. Harry was a graduate of Lynchburg College and Virginia was a graduate of the Lynchburg General School of Nursing. Although largely unknown to the general public the Waltons' reputation as collectors was widely respected in bibliophile and academic circles and items from their collection were exhibited at numerous colleges universities and art centers. The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia was established by the learned naturalists of high Philadelphian society in early 19th century America to document the recent natural discoveries of a new nation and farther afield. The founding members and contributors were the luminaries of early American natural history and sciences; Titian Peale Thomas Say and George Ord to name a few. The Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences was their clarion and was illustrated with wonderful folio-sized hand-colored lithographs by RP Smith Lithographer.
