Greville 1818-1893 had served as aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria and was an active proponent of Victorian Gothic architecture who along with his wife Anne Charteris promoted British farms and trades. Contents consist of 4 pages measuring 13.5" x 8" of 1932 information on "Pure Bred Holstein-Friesian" dairy cows from the Maytag Dairy Farms in Newton Iowa; 3 pages of typed manuscript from Carnation Farms on letterhead to a potential customer dated May 12 1933; 6 pages of 1932 detailed typed information from Carnation Milk Farms on cows; and a group of 16 cow photographs measuring approx. 5.5" x 3.25". <br /> <br /> Information typed on the front sides and has been folded twice presumable for mailing purposes. Light foxing on the blank side of one page. A couple of gem clip stains on the paper. Several of the photographs have brief notes or abbreviations written on back. Oblong 4to. 1 boudoir sized albumen photo sized 5 x 8 in. mounted on 8 x 10 in. re-used studio mount corners carefully rounded and albumen portrait photo mounted on verso crossed out in pencil by the photographer very minor dustsoiling slight stain to left margin of board still VG bright image. By 1890 Marion County and farms near Stayton Oregon had become known for their wheat made into buckwheat flour which drew premium prices wherever sold. This image shows wagons loaded with loose grain being hauled to the thresher or separator where it was loaded into the feeder an adjustable hopper and then the separated kernels were loaded into stacks. This image shows the traction engine connected by wide leather possibly rubberized belt to the threshing machine itself. Brown 1860-1931 only operated as a professional photographer in Stayton Oregon in 1891 before moving to Salem where he continued until about 1896. He later became an itinerant preacher in Clark County WA opened and ran a second hand store before World War I in Brownsville OR before moving to Stockton & Manteca CA. First editions of these works in this Jersey Cattle sammelband organized and bound for Jersey Cattle breeder and specialists Charles & Lizzie Belvin of Raleigh NC in the 1880’s. Samuel Moor Shoemaker’s Jersey Cattle herd was one of the most significant breeding operations for productive Jersey dairy cattle in 19th-Century Maryland as Jerseys produced milk components at a far lower cost had greater nutritional value had greater fertility and fewer calving problems as well as much better temperament. Included are two dittoed TLS from the American Jersey Cattle Club to Charles Belvin concerning the registration of prize cow “Miss May†subsequently bred with “Thoroughbred Jersey Bull ‘Bismarck of Torrington’ owned by Dr. Jas. McKee and W.C. Stronach†with certification from 1882 included.Lizzie Belvin was apparently actively involved in caring for the Jersey’s and included here are bound-in manuscript note indicating “On the 2nd of Feb. 1884 a swelling was observed on the neck of May. After using some ointment it was found next day to be better.†Although discovered having convulsions the next day they used treatment of kerosene on the neck and even while 6 months with calf was producing milk within a few days. The other dated 1890 and laid-in notes that “I was fixing to give the medicine to calf in her. I read a little further & send you the book read on page 92 in here I have marked -- give the eggs in a pint of hot milk now and tonight. . . Lizzie.†Worldcat locates 1 copy of 1st work Rutherford B. Some toning and scattered dampstaining internally. A scarce Spanish-language London imprint concerning basic agriculture produced for the Ackermann family of publishers. During the mid-1820s the elder Ackermann sent his son George to Mexico to establish branches of their bookselling concern across Hispanophone America and produced a number of books in Spanish for the project. The present text is in fact written entirely in the question-and-answer form of a catechism with twenty chapters on different types of farm plants. One hand-coloured photo printed on thick matte finish stock sized 11.25 x 19.25 in. w/ caption and photographer’s imprint w/in the negative at lower right corner minor dustsoiling age toning to fore-edges still a VG image. This splendid large panoramic advertising photo offers a superb example from a hustling commercial photographer between the World Wars in the Pacific Northwest. Thayer marketed his talents to the wealthy upper classes in the Portland area by offering beautifully hand-coloured large display photographs of their businesses impressive homes interiors and exteriors and even offering Christmas cards and calendars to send to their friends business associates and family as a specialty. Famed for his coloured photographic images of bucolic 1920s log cabin homes tucked away in forest glens he has captured the broad green fields rolling hills of this historic dairy best known for their locally grown “Golden Guernsey Milk†products. Founded by Eckelman 1885-1966 a German-American immigrant and his brother Paul before World War I the Fairview Dairy became well known for its’ glass-lined inslulated tanks sanitizing plant and efficient service. In the 1970’s Fairview Farms joined the Mayflower Farms dairy cooperative and the brand disappeared. No examples located in Worldcat or other collections. Alfalfa came to the western United States from South America during the California gold rush era and spread east from there. It is primarily grown as feed for livestock. Offered here are fourteen photographs and one negative showing alfalfa cultivation around the US in locations including California New York Missouri Arkansas the Dakotas Minnesota and others. Those photos that have dates are dated between 1908 and 1929. From the archives of the Brown Brothers agency likely their whole file on the subject we can say with certainty this is one of the largest assemblages of press photographs of alfalfa that one is likely to encounter.
