Folio approximately 29cm x 48 cm pp lxvi 316 iv all edges gilt with some foxing on the earlier and later few pages errata slip pasted to verso of the contents pages with 123 mounted specimens in good condition and 35 mounted groups of seeds half morocco and marbled boards a little rubbed and scuffed a darker stain towards the base of the spine marbled endpapers with the armorial bookplate of Henry Collins. The specimens are frequently described as all grass though this is incorrect - approximately nine of them are leguminous plants. Many of them are delicately heightened in watercolour. This copy does not have the folding plan and very few copies do. RARE. A very heavy book weighing nearly 8.5 kilos - extra postage costs will need to be added. A paper in 'Science' 25/01/2002 by Andy Hector and Rowan Hooper has called this book which influenced Charles Darwin "arguably the first ecological experiment". Darwin in his 'Origin of the Species' refers to an experiment investigating the biology of grassland plants that showed how a greater diversity of grasses planted in experimental plots was responsible for greater production of plant matter but Darwin left no clues as to where or when this experiment was done. Hector and Hooper show that it is Sinclair's 'Hortus Gramineus Woburnensis' which details this experimental garden. First Edition. Half Leather. Good. B. McMillan Hardcover

A splendid example of the works published by the French statistical bureau very much in the style established by Charles Josph Minard. On the outside the book appears drab and undistinguished but on the inside it is alive with a profusion of dazzling coloured charts. These statistical works have been called "the finest specimens of French graphic art in the century" H.G. Funkhuser. A rare book with OCLC listing only NYPL LC and 1 copy in the Netherlands 1 in Spain and 1 in Hungary. hardcover

An extensive guide to the practice of agriculture in the early modern era of Meiji Japan. Largely text but illustrated throughout in woodcut some of which in each volume are skillfully colored. Near fine condition. Unusual and important work. Miyazaki Ryujo had also produced such importantlandmarks of modern learning as the Shintei Nihon yochi zenzu of 1878. Complete. unknown
18385957Sancti Spiritus 1838. Good plus. Broadside measuring 12.5 x 17.5 inches. Previously folded. Light wear to edges and along old fold lines with a few small chips at edges. Moderate toning and soiling. An unrecorded broadside that prints statistics relating to agricultural production for the region of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba during the late 1830s. For each municipality the broadside prints the number of property owners; ranches; land-grant farms; slaves; white employees; animals including mules donkeys cows and sheep; distances to transport and shipping hubs; and several other figures. In the bottom third of the broadside are printed the census figures from 1836 with the population totaling just over 40000 people and split into Black and white groups. Rather pointedly the figures for the white population are divided by gender while the figures for the Black population are divided by status free or slave. A very interesting statistical snapshot of a smaller rural region in colonial Cuba in 1838. Not in OCLC. unknown

Federal Agricultural PolicyEnvironmental ManagementUSDA Archive of 17 United States Department of Agriculture Farmers' Bulletins and federal publications issued between 1898 and 1949 documenting the federal government's expanding role in agricultural science land management and homesteading during the Progressive Era and the decades surrounding the Dust Bowl. These bulletins document the federal government's expanding role in agricultural production and were a crucial part of the print system through which the United State Department of Agriculture translated experiment-station research into practical directions for farmers and rural households. Several carry the red distribution stamp "Sent by Harry R. Sheppard Member of Congress" preserving the congressional channels through which USDA advice circulated alongside the wider extension network. The bulletins were handed out free of charge through congressional offices agricultural colleges and rural postal networks reaching millions of farm households and implementing federal agricultural policy at the local level. The publications represented here emerged from the legislature introduced by the Morrill Acts the Hatch Act and the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 which created the federal system linking agricultural research land-grant universities and cooperative extension services. <br /> <br /> The earliest publications in this archive address plant disease and propagation showing the USDA's early emphasis on scientific control of crop failure and the standardization of cultivation practices. By the interwar and wartime decades the scope of instruction had widened to include vegetable production seed storage sweet potato preservation cabbage disease fern eradication from pasture lands brush and stump clearing and the control of Johnson grass alongside household and regional titles such as The Home Fruit Garden in the Pacific Coast States and Arizona and Production of Maple Syrup and Sugar. External description: corners and spine tips rounded and bumped with minor fraying at the extremities of the corners. Some bumping as well to the board edges where they extend beyond the textblock. Rubbed lightened spot to the center of the spine column and darkening ot the top of the boards and the top edge of the textblock. Interior description: Front pastedown with two erasure spots - brown papers lightened and scuffed from the erasure. Front hinge is split with paper exposing the binding web - still relatively solid. The rear hinge is starting but not as advanced as the front. Darkening to the edges of the back of the free endpapers from the dark brown endpaper coloring coming through. Some light soil at the half-title. Frontispiece plates graphs and maps intact including two large folding maps bound in at rear and an extending graph in the supplements. One of the folded maps has a long tear at the binding edge. Binding feels solid and sturdy although cupping the spine will always be recommended with a book of this size and weight. Advert for the European publisher's catalog affixed to the rear pastedown. The pages are bright and clean majorly free of the foxing that generally plagues books of this time period. A well-kept copy inspite of the wear at the hinges and board edges. 637 pp. <br/><br/> W.H. Allen & Co. hardcover

Inscription reads - "Henry S. Cave Compliments of Saml M. Inman Treasurer Atlanta Ga. June 23 1884." H. S. Cave from Atlanta inscription is written on the verso of the frontispiece. Another owners name in pencil on the front paste down "Augusta Wylie King." A later owner's address mailing label located in the upper left corner front paste down. From the New Georgia Encyclopedia:<br /> <br /> Atlanta held its first exposition named the International Cotton Exposition in Oglethorpe Park in 1881. The city then had fewer than 40000 residents and the primary sense in which the first exposition was “international†was the display of cotton plants from around the world. Nevertheless Atlantans were eager to host the 1881 exposition to promote investment and to help the city toward its goal of becoming an industrial center which was a primary component of Grady’s “New South†concept. Although attendance was lower than expected fewer than 200000 in paid attendance during its two-and-a-half-month run city leaders demonstrated that they could work together to host a major event and that Atlanta was serious about its role in textile production at a time when the North was beginning to grow dissatisfied with the efficiency of southern cotton processing. The exposition displayed new crop planters and cotton seed cleaners along with a model of Eli Whitney’s original cotton gin and speakers addressed the crowds about agricultural technology and political reforms. During the mid-1820s the elder Ackermann sent his son George to Mexico to establish branches of their bookselling concern across Hispanophone America and produced a number of books in Spanish for the project. The present text is in fact written entirely in the question-and-answer form of a catechism with twenty chapters on different types of farm plants.
