Folio approximately 29cm x 48 cm pp lxvi 316 iv all edges gilt with some foxing on the earlier and later few pages errata slip pasted to verso of the contents pages with 123 mounted specimens in good condition and 35 mounted groups of seeds half morocco and marbled boards a little rubbed and scuffed a darker stain towards the base of the spine marbled endpapers with the armorial bookplate of Henry Collins. The specimens are frequently described as all grass though this is incorrect - approximately nine of them are leguminous plants. Many of them are delicately heightened in watercolour. This copy does not have the folding plan and very few copies do. RARE. A very heavy book weighing nearly 8.5 kilos - extra postage costs will need to be added. A paper in 'Science' 25/01/2002 by Andy Hector and Rowan Hooper has called this book which influenced Charles Darwin "arguably the first ecological experiment". Darwin in his 'Origin of the Species' refers to an experiment investigating the biology of grassland plants that showed how a greater diversity of grasses planted in experimental plots was responsible for greater production of plant matter but Darwin left no clues as to where or when this experiment was done. Hector and Hooper show that it is Sinclair's 'Hortus Gramineus Woburnensis' which details this experimental garden. First Edition. Half Leather. Good. B. McMillan Hardcover

Exemplaire à l'état proche du neuf, rares marques. Intérieur très frais. Rousseurs acceptables aux premiers et derniers feuillets, à quelques autres feuillets. Chaque volume porte au verso de la garde la signature autographe du Prince Dietrichstein. Édition originale. Ouvrage classique basé sur les documents officiels. De la propriété territoriale aux produits de l'agriculture, à l’accroissement des produits de l'agriculture, comparé à l'accroissement de la population. La dernière partie est consacrée à l'agriculture en Europe. Les remarques de Maurice Rubichon (1766-1849) qui terminent chaque chapitre sont très pertinentes et du plus grand intérêt. Provenance : Signature ex libris du Prince Dietrichstein. L'exemplaire provient de la belle bibliothèque (aujourd'hui démantelée) du Prince Moritz von Dietrichstein (19 février 1775 Vienne - Décès 27 août 1864 (à 89 ans), bibliothécaire et militaire. Fils du prince Karl Johann von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie (1728-1808) et de Maria Christina Gräfin von Thun und Hohenstein (1738–1788), il est le frère de Franz Joseph von Dietrichstein. Il rejoint en 1791 l'armée autrichien, devient aide de camp du général Mack en 1798 à Naples, où il se heurta la capture de son chef par les Français, partagea sa captivité à Paris et l'accompagna dans sa fuite. Il reprit les mêmes fonctions au près du même général à Ulm en 1805. En 1815, il est nommé gouverneur et précepteur du duc de Reichstadt, petit-fils de l'empereur François Ier d'Autriche, fonction qu'il conserva jusqu'à la décès du prince en 1831. Il prit par la suite la direction des théâtres et de la musique de la Cour impériale autrichienne et fut nommé préfet de la Bibliothèque impériale. En 1838, il a acquis pour la Bibliothèque la partition du Requiem de Mozart. En tant que directeur du Cabinet des médailles et antiquités de 1833 à 1848, il a acquis un grand mérite. En 1834, il a été nommé membre honoraire de l'Académie bavaroise des sciences. En 1836, il est fait chevalier de l'ordre de la Toison d'or par l'empereur Ferdinand Ier d'Autriche. Il est nommé chambellan en 1845. Comme son frère, le prince Franz Joseph, il était opposé au système Metternich. (notice Wikipédia). Très bel exemplaire.

Charles-Gilbert, vicomte Morel de Vindé était magistrat, agronome, littérateur et homme politique. Il est né le 20 janvier 1759 à Paris où il est mort le 19 décembre 1842. Conseiller des enquêtes au Parlement de Paris en 1778), il se consacre pendant la Révolution à des travaux d'agronomie. En 1819, Morel Vindé est appelé à faire partie du conseil de l'Agriculture, auprès du ministère de l'Intérieur. Il est, en 1820, nommé vicomte, pair de France héréditaire. On lui doit plusieurs ouvrages très intéressants sur ce sujet : Modèle d'un bail à ferme, 1799 - Mémoire sur l'exacte parité des laines mérinos de France et d'Espagne, 1807 - Mémoire et Instructions sur les troupeaux de progression, 1808 - Plans et détails d'une nouvelle construction rurale pour servir de grange , 1813 - Quelques observations rapides sur la théorie des assolements, 1822 - Considérations sur le morcellement de la propriété territoriale en France, 1826 - Théorie sur la population, 1829. Il avait publié par ailleurs plusieurs ouvrages de littérature (légère) dans sa jeunesse. Morel-Vindé est convaincu que l’agriculture est le principal fondement de toute économie politique et que l’agriculteur est « un industriel forçant la nature vivante à produire abondamment et au plus bas prix possible », il fait partie de ces nombreux propriétaires agronomes qui appliquent les sciences positives à l’art agricole. Sa fortune et sa position sociale éminente lui permettent de transformer ses propriétés « en fermes d’expériences et d’exemples » et de modéliser de nouveaux types de bâtiments ruraux. Moderate toning and soiling. An unrecorded broadside that prints statistics relating to agricultural production for the region of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba during the late 1830s. For each municipality the broadside prints the number of property owners; ranches; land-grant farms; slaves; white employees; animals including mules donkeys cows and sheep; distances to transport and shipping hubs; and several other figures. In the bottom third of the broadside are printed the census figures from 1836 with the population totaling just over 40000 people and split into Black and white groups. Rather pointedly the figures for the white population are divided by gender while the figures for the Black population are divided by status free or slave. A very interesting statistical snapshot of a smaller rural region in colonial Cuba in 1838. Not in OCLC. unknown

Clearly marked on the map are the locations of schools post offices grain elevators and rail stations which are linked through the evolving transportation network of both constructed and projected railway lines.
