Contemporary flexible textured calf Heinn Co. binding minor rubbing shelfwear still an excellent exemplar. This exceptional souvenir photo album visually documents the efforts of the British Columbia government to relieve the overcrowding at the Provincial Hospital for the Insane in New Westminster in the first decade of the 20th Century. In 1904 after appropriating 1000 acres of the traditional lands of the Kwiketlem First Nation peoples Dr. Charles Doherty focused on clearing over 180 hecatres of the flood plain constructing dikes building state-of-the-art farm buildings to provide purpose therapeutic occupational training and food for the new hospital which would later become Riverview. The Progressive Era movement to reform treatment of the mentally ill was to not only free them from deplorable asylum conditions which reformers such as Julia Lathrop Adolf Meyer and Eleanor Clark Slagle believed only increased otherwise curable mental illnesses but also provide training to gain employment upon discharge from the hospital. Doherty insisted on paying the patients a small salary to work and live at the farm and the Holstein herd which began with 22 cows in 1910 grew swiftly after importing 50 more from New York and Carnation Farms of Seattle so that that by the end of 1912 the farm was producing nearly 50000 gallons of milk with prize cows capturing top prizes at local farm exhibitions. The photographs open with shot of the gate to Colony Farm cottages and dining halls for patients barns and milking stations stables hay barn water tower silos corrals pumping station and dairy facilities. In addition there are several photos showing land clearing burgeoning silage corn fields nurseries horse-drawn seeding cutting hay oats and steam threshing.The final photo shows the initial reinforced concrete Essondale Hospital with red brick facades in the final stages of construction and would open later in 1913. One of the photos includes an office calendar dated November 1912 while two others show the visit of Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught 1850-1942 the first Governor General of Canada to be a member of the British Royal Family and his wife Princess Louise to the successful Colony Farm Sept. 11 1912. The Colony farm was expanded in 1918 by another 700 acres and would continue to thrive through World War II. Unfortunately in 1946 a series of arson fires destroyed most of the documents of the dairy operation and Colony Farm and eventually due to budgetary pressures the farm closed in 1983. The halcyon intentions of Manchester and Doherty would later be undone during the 20th Century as budgetary restraints prevented expansion or proper treatments so that by 1956 the Essondale Hospital was housing 4306 patients and 2200 staff members in buildings designed for 1800 patients. In addition medical practices of the time ranged from electroshock therapy and forced sterilization and would eventually be closed in 1992 as the de-institutionalization movement gained favor. Moore 1887-1963 launched his photographic career with Byron Harmon in Banff Alberta and by 1912 was established in Vancouver specializing in panoramic photographs after 1913 and later forming a partnership with Wilfred F. McConnell buying the Canadian Photo Co. He retired from the firm in 1953. The Holtshill Saddlery factory within an ornate decorative border. Index 62 full page lithographic plates of the companys stock. Tipped-in to the index page is a printed note stating this is catalogue number 809 in ink and remains the property of the company 'and only lent to you'. Most of the pages are in colour and cover all aspects of products from a leather makers output. Saddles straps buggy harnesses heads and reins dog collars muzzles metal bits harnesses and buckles tools brushes cart hames saddlers tools etc etc. The boards are original but worn leaving a fine example of a scarce catalgue intect and complete within. A RARE ITEM. No copy traced and no literature relating to E.J. Parkes seems to have survived. The illus. cover depicts a very large business before the first world war and they must have had a busy period during the Great War but Walshall despite being the major city for horse equipment manufacturing lost that status with the advent of cars lorries and international competition in the 1920s There are many general traders catalogue of horse related equipment found but manufacturers catalogues are rare and no copy of this catalogue have been traced. Indeed none by the manufacturer appears to have survived. This could have been that the catalogue has a bound in slip printed in red stating 'THIS CATALOGUE in No 809 and and is only lent to you' .The binding is original hard boards with a plain cloth finish but worn. <br/> <br/> E.J. A quartet of rare agricultural pamphlets published in a series of works by the Imperial Department of Agriculture for the West Indies in the early-20th century each focused on a different aspect of agricultural cultivation in the Leeward Islands St. Lucia and other locations in the West Indies. The pamphlets were issued by the British colonial government in Barbados and likely printed there. Each work includes detailed reports on resources for agricultural cultivation methods and challenges to crop production and other information relative to agriculture on the islands; one of the pamphlets is a promotional work for St. Lucia. The pamphlets are supplemented with tables of information and/or profusely illustrated with photographs picturing various aspects of West Indian agriculture. The works included here are as follows:<br /> <br /> 1 Summary of the Results of the Cultivation of Seedling and Other Canes at the Experiment Stations in the Leeward Islands. 1908-09. Cameron. Hints to Settlers in St. Lucia. Pamphlet Series No. 80. Barbados: 1915 wrapper dated 1916. 228pp. plus a full-page map and ten duotone photographic plates. New and enlarged edition. Noticeable area of loss to top left of front wrapper bottom corner chipped wrappers detached. A fairly straightforward promotional touting the infrastructure health agricultural and other benefits of the island of St. Lucia. The work was written by the former Administrator of St. Lucia Edward J. Cameron. The work includes a full-page map of the island and several duotone photographs picturing the harbor various buildings a cacao plant "Coco-Nut Beach" views of the Experiment Station and most interestingly a group of indigenous agricultural laborers "Bringing in Limes" on the La Perle Estate. Only one copy in OCLC at Cambridge.<br /> <br /> 4 A.J. Brooks. The Agricultural and Economic Resources of St. Lucia. Pamphlet Series No. 81. Barbados: 1916. 242pp. An informative guide to the climate geology agricultural products and industries and more of St. Lucia written by the Agricultural Superintendent of the island. From 1879 to 1895 the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station report and from 1888 to 1896 the Storrs School report were bound together with the Board report as well as issued separately. Overall thus 72 volumes in 43. An important record of agriculture agricultural thought agricultural practices and agricultural influences in Connecticut from the close of the Civil War to the just after the First World War.
