'Squire' Job Roberts (1757-1851) was a remarkable man of Welsh Quaker decent. He was born, lived, and died in Whitpain, close to Gwynedd, and for many years he was one of the most conspicuous figures in the farming, business and social circles of Gwynedd. He did much to improve the methods of farming, planted hedges, introduced the feeding of green fodder to cattle, instead of grazing, built a barn which was enormously large, according to the usual standard, and very early introduced the use of gypsum on fields. He was one of the first in Pennsylvania to introduce and breed Merino sheep, and during the movement to establish the manufacture of silk he was one of its most zealous promoters. In 1791, Gov. Mifflin appointed him a justice of the peace, and he continued as such until 1820, when he resigned and returned to farming and other entreprenureal pursuits. S&S/AI 7203; Sabin 71898; Rink 1148. The entomologist author provides an important contribution to agriculture with descriptions of the natural history and economy of insects affecting field crops, pastures and vegetables, and the basis for their control. There were several later printings of this popular work.

The author travelled in Upper and Lower Canada, Vermont, Oswego, Cincinnati, Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, Charleston, southern states and Cuba and compares the climate to that of Scotland, describing crops and growing conditions, but also describes the many towns and cities he passed through ('Bytown is a dirty and disagreeable place'), slavery, society, the people, etc. Three chapters relate to his travels in Cuba ('the food-producing powers of the banana are considerably overrated'). An interesting and entertaining work.

First Edition, [iv],16pp., tile slightly spotted, disbound. Newby analysis the properties of Mangel-Wurzel, German for beet root, it was originally developed in the 18th century for cattle fodder and was strongly recommended by Dr. Lettsom. The author gives several examples, one of which is a farmer who produced above 47 tons per acre, and says that he could never obtain more than two thirds of this weight of Swedish turnips. Copac locates the BL and Cambridge copies only; Perkins, 1272; Fussell III, p.104.

First edition, 4to (270 x 205 mm), viii, [2], 177, [1]pp., without half-title, 7 engraved plates (one folding, one double-page, one slightly cropped), title browned, later boards. The author of this important report may well be Sir John Sinclair., President of the Board of Agriculture. The publication had its origins in a speech by Sinclair early in 1795 in which he stressed the scarcity and high price of grain and other 'provisions' and that "the most effective remedy which had occurred to him was, to encourage as much as possible, an increased culture of potatoes, which could be cultivated almost in any ground, and might be planted where wheat could not be raised at all... potatoes would be a certain resource as food for man; or if the crop were abundant, they might be converted to the purpose of fattening stock..." Not in Fussell, Rothamsted or Perkins.
