He then sets out to illustrate the example been carried out by Richard Westbrook Baker on the estates of Sir Gerard Noel Noel in Rutland. Here Baker had formed 'The County of Rutland General Friendly Institution' with an aim to ameliorate the condition of the poor, by means of the small allotment system, child education, and the benefit of the Stamford and Rutland Infirmary. s a tool of economic development of the poor people living below poverty line, micro finance has been a tremendous success in recent years. In developing economies including India this is in vogue for quite some time. Its success is vindicated by the conferment of Noble Prize on the pioneer, Dr. Mohammad Yunus and has ignited serious thinking by academicians, researchers, practitioners and policy makers. Recent years have seen a plethora of research works on this subject - its effectiveness, outreach, sustainability, impact, regulation etc. Most importantly the sustainability aspect is highly emphasised as the outreach has reached a sizeable number of households, particularly in India. This book precisely delves into the aspect of sustainability of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and of the most acclaimed programme of micro financing, i.e., SHG-Bank Linkage Programme (SBLP) launched by NABARD in early nineties. The primary data base for this work is from a most micro finance deserving states of North East India, i.e., Meghalaya where more than 80 percent of population lives in rural areas and more than one-third lives below poverty line. From a survey of credit linked SHGs sustainability variables of SHGs, its linked banks and of the SBLP have been identified and finally an index has been prepared to scale the sustainability of the programme as a whole. This type of work particularly on grassroots organisations like SHGs is very scanty. In North East this is the first of its kind which provides a detailed picture about the financial conditions of SHGs and their long-term prospects. Also completed his M.Phil., LLB and Ph.D. from the same University. First edition, 4to (285 x 220 mm), xvi, 244pp., with half-title, 9 folding engraved plates, the Lawes stamp at head of title, orig. boards scuffed, cloth reback, uncut. William Amos (c.1745?1825), Lincolnshire farmer and Agriculturalist writer. Amos's interest in new agricultural practices led him to undertake a series of crop trials from 1783 onwards, and these convinced him of the superiority of seed-drilling over the traditional broadcast method of sowing. As early as 1787 he was developing his own version of a drill-plough and he announced plans in that year for a book describing it; but his employer's death in 1788 and his subsequent move to Brothertoft in Lincolnshire as bailiff to Major John Cartwright (political reformer) delayed this project. While acting as bailiff and later as estate steward to Cartwright, Amos conducted further trials on his own farm as well as Cartwright's. Cartwright combined an active political career with a keen interest in agricultural improvement, and the collaboration between the two men over a period of fifteen years or so proved beneficial to both. It also brought Amos into contact with their close neighbour Sir Joseph Banks, who later described Amos as 'an honest man and an ingenious one', and with the agriculturist Arthur Young, who visited Cartwright's farm, saw some of Amos's inventions and remained in correspondence with him, obtaining a number of submissions from Amos for publication in his Annals of Agriculture. It was during this period of his life that Amos published his two books, The Theory and Practice of the Drill Husbandry and Minutes in Agriculture. (Wikipedia).
