Clean and bright with very light wear. Handsomely decorated read boards. Front endpaper bears prior owner's ink stamps, blind stamp, and handwritten personal details. Atop several pages the page number has been hand-written in. Bit of writing inside back board. This copy was obviously cherished and treated accordingly by its prior owner. A lovely copy of this magnificent compilation. Book

Some closed tears at fold lines; right margin chipped no text loss; an old mend touches one signature; fair to good.</p> <p>Certificate of election to The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture—the oldest agricultural society in the United States—issued to Henry Simpson as a “Resident Member.†An illustration by J.J. Barralet at the top engraved by William Harrison shows an idyllic farm scene with a farmer stacking hay a plough a harrow and the coat of arms of the society. The plough motif is repeated on the seal at the bottom of the certificate.</p> <p>The document is signed by U.S. District Court Judge Richard Peters 1744–1828 charter member and then-president of The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. Peters was an officer of the Continental Congress and a delegate to the Congress of the Confederation. In 1776 Peters was made secretary of the Board of War; becoming a full member in 1777. Lawyer and abolitionist Roberts Vaux 1786–1836 signs as the society’s secretary.</p> <p>The newly elected member may be Henry Simpson 1790–1868 who wrote The Lives of Eminent Philadelphians now Deceased in 1859.</p> unknown

Location is unknown but most likely this ledger book was from the northern United States. N.A. unknown

Approximately 60 pages are blank. Brownish marbled paper covered boards with tan leather spine. Marbled paper is shelf worn. Spine is chipped at head and base. Arithmetic pencil notes written on the end sheets. A few pages torn out of the ledger in back. Interior content in good condition. About half the pages or less are used for accounts. First page starts with the written heading - "Cash paid out for Company 1863 by S. W. Stinson." Items listed on the first two pages include Horse accessories wagons wagon parts shoes stables oats hay and other horse and wagon related items. Several pages following the 1863 and 1864 records are equations written in pencil. One of these pages has the heading - "Bark Measured for S P Atherton". From the middle sections of the ledger to the end are several products associated with clothing accessories. One page is dated 1865/66. Goods and costs of items include a sewing machine buttons embroidery "infants waist" braid fringe ribbon lace cuffs collars trimmings feather bonnets hats silk etc. Towards the back of the ledger is a short inscription signed by S Stinson Ludlow Vermont. Several leaves in back of the ledger are torn out. 55 pages used for recording payments received payments paid selling skins oil pine tar work services sawing flour plank bark crackers oats salt beef etc. <br /> <br /> Dozens of names listed inside the ledger. A couple of account pages have "Dairy Skins" headings at top of the pages. Dates and entries for the ledger are not continous. Entries start January 12 1874 to and finish in April 1879. Location unknown for the ledger but a couple of entries inside mention St. Albans and one mentions Montpelier. n/a hardcover

First edition of this scarce program for an annual Victorian farm exhibition held in Chewton Mendip with prizes for the best and most productive farms as well as finest hunting horses race horses and many other classes of produce & livestock. Greville 1818-1893 had served as aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria and was an active proponent of Victorian Gothic architecture who along with his wife Anne Charteris promoted British farms and trades. He is perhaps best remembered for establishing the famed Shakespeare Library at Warwick Castle now residing at the Folger Library. No copies in Worldcat.
