Uniformly bound in original printed wrappers some scuffing soiling edgewear occasional light foxing still a VG- uncut & unopened presentation set inscribed and presented by Honore Lantenois & Henri Mansuy to Prof. Marcellin Boule 1861-1942 French geologist palaeontologist and physical anthropologist who reconstructed the first complete Neanderthal skeleton in France. First edition presentation set of this massive first installment in the Geological Survey of Southeast Asia begun in 1908 documenting the biostratigraphy of the Yunnan Region which was awarded the Tchihatchef Prize of the French Academy of Sciences. Much of this survey work was done during the building of the Hanoi to Yunnan-fou Kunming railroad which was built by the French to exploit the tremendous mineral wealth of Yunnan. The Director of the Department of Natural Resources for France in Vietnam was Honore Lantenois 1863-1940 who worked for years with Henri Mansuy 1857-1937 and sent him back to France several times to study palaeontology at the School of Natural Resources Ecole des Mines. Lantenois recruited Jacques Deprat 1880-1935 in 1908 -- at the time a brilliant palaeontologist -- to conduct an ambitious program mapping the geology of Indochina and neighboring areas. All three men became involved in the notorious Deprat Affair which resulted in Mansuy accusing Deprat to Lantenois in 1917 that Deprat had used a few European-sources trilobites among his fossil specimens from Indochina and Yunnan. This accusation rested on the distinction that the suspect trilobites were not just similar in nature to others found in Europe but the matrix they were embedded may have originated from Europe. Although nearly 90 years later it would be determined that the trilobite fauna discovered by Deprat indicated that the Yunnan had occupied a location adjacent to Bohemia originally in the early Palaeozoic period; the French scientific community condemned Deprat at the time stripped him of his degrees and posts and forced him to leave the field. A complete set including the Atlas is quite scarce. A few spots in the text, plates mostly clean. A good copy of this rare work.Part of a large series on all aspects of Bohemian Silurian fossils. Each volume was privately printed in only 250 copies. From 1840 to his death Barrande collected, described and drew the fossils of the central Bohemian Basin - this area has been called the Barrandian ever since. At that time 'Silurian' might be applied to strata that today are in the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian or Devonian system. Because this work is so comprehensive, its drawings so accurate and its descriptions so fine, it is still used as a reference book by palaeontologists. The Cephalopoda (mostly ammonites) were described and figured in volume II, which consist of nine parts, and two supplements. All parts are rare. This is a third of the gastropod part (IV of the series), and includes many new species. Published well after Barrande's death (1799-1883), it was written by Jaroslav Perner, most new species, however, are attributed to Barrande, based on his manuscript names.

This work lists every Tertiary (and many Quaternary) non-marine mollusc, that is: the original description and all subsequent references. The bibliography is enormous. Seldom found complete because it was published over a long period of time. The parts of this series are different from the parts of the whole work because more, unrelated parts of the Fossilium Catalogus were published in between. The right collation is: I= Pars 17; II = 18; III = 20; IV = 21; V = 22; VI = 23, VII = 32; VIII = 38; IX = 40; X = 43; XI = 46. In total the Fossilium Catalogue Animalia contained 138 parts (up to 2002). The exact publication dates of the 11 parts are on p. 3387. Added is a curious loose title page for parts 17-20, "pag. 1-884" but this does not match the actual publication as part 20 had a pagination up to 1068. With the small stamp of Herbert Ant on front covers and title-pages. Uncut. Rare.
