Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) A fine half leather bdg. with marbled boards. Two volumes in one. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). The text in Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters) with bilingual titles in Ottoman Turkish and French on frontispieces and title pages. 2 volumes set: (248 p.; 270, [1] p., the first volume has Columbus' engraved portrait frontispiece, the second has Amerigo Vespucci's portrait). Hegira: 1310 = Gregorian: 1893. First and only edition of this very rare book, which is the first Turkish original work on the history of the discovery of America printed for the Quadricentennial of the Discovery. With this book, Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci quickly became popular among Ottoman readers (soon after Iranian readers with a translation of the first volume only), and immediately among other Middle Eastern readers, and thus the first comprehensive and original text describing Colombus and the discovery of America appeared in the Middle East and Islamic world. It's been published in Istanbul under the title "The history of the discovery and conquest of America". The first volume is on Christopher Columbus, and the second volume is on Amerigo Vespucci, their lives and travels. Andreas Kopassis Efendy (1856-1912) was one of the few Ottoman Greeks proficient in the Ottoman literary language. Cretan Kopassis is an intriguing figure who made a remarkable career serving the Ottoman state. At the time of the publication, he was a member of the State Council (Sura-yi Devlet). He displayed quite an extraordinary interest in scholarly research and he seems to have been one of the first to have studied Ottoman "tahrir defterleri" [i.e. Ottoman tax registers]. This could be called a translation in a sense. Kopassis makes no reference to preceding translations, nor does he refer to Robertson's history of America. His main source was a more recent equally "classic" work on Christopher Columbus, Washington Irving's "History of the life and voyages of Christopher Columbus" (first published in 1828). Another source referred to by Kopassis is J. H. Campe's "Entdeckung von Amerika" (first published in 1781). His educational background is evident particularly in the introductory chapter where ample references are made to Pliny, Ptolemy, and Plato's Timaios which contain allusions to Atlantis. In his takri (Introduction) to this work, Kemalpasazade Said Bey (1848-1921) praised the author for his elegant prose. Sultan Abdülhamid awarded the order of merit (liyâkât) in gold to the author. In the same year (1315=1895), an aide-de-camp at the Iranian Ministry of War, Muhibb-i 'Âli Khan, translated the first volume into Persian. At the turn of the century, Christopher Columbus had become a very popular figure for Ottoman readers of all ages...". First and only edition of a detailed history of the ancient world, covering and comparing the cultures, religions, governments, (civil and ecclesiastical) legal systems, etc. of societies throughout the Old World. After a brief discussion of the pre-diluvian world, it covers the ancient Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe country by country or region by region, citing both biblical and classical sources. The Cellarius map appears to be based on the 1664 map of the same title by Johannes Strubius (Shirley 434, in the same projection and showing the same regions, but not including Australia), but its more accurate and up-to-date cartographic data appears to have been taken from one of the world maps in two hemispheres that were common from at least 1658 (Visscher's, Shirley 406). As in those maps, the coast of Australia shows a small break at 30 degrees south latitude. Cellarius (1638-1707) had produced a series of historical maps for his Notitia Orbis Antiqui, first published at Leipzig in 1701, and the present map may be based on one from that book. Ne ho sospeso la stampa: 1ø Per giovarmi delle osservazioni del Sig.Beccari. 2ø PerchŠ le riduzioni barometriche si fanno differentemente nei diversi osservatori d'Europa, ci• che genera confusione grande. 3ø Perche non deve adottarsi la formula di Laplace, ma sceglierne una ove si tenga ancora a calcolo lo stato igrometrico dell'aria e la componente verticale dell'intensit… del vento. 4ø PerchŠ nell'adoperar le formole conviene valutare il peso degli errori di osservazione. (mm. 242x171), p. pelle bazana coeva, dorso a cordoni con titolo oro (abrasioni), tagli rossi, pp. XVI,428, bella vignetta di soggetto navale al frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero, vignetta alle armi alla dedica, un ritratto dell’A. e 1 carta geografica f.t., più volte ripieg., “che dimostra il giro del Centurione intorno al mondo”, tutto inc. in rame; testatine e capilettera xilografati. Rara traduzione italiana della relazione del viaggio dell’Ammiraglio inglese George Anson (1697-1762) attorno al globo, dal 1741 al 1744, redatta dal suo cappellano Richard Walter. Cfr. Borba de Moraes,I, p. 32 (in nota alla prima edizione inglese del 1748): “During the war with Spain several English ship owners obtained permission to arm a fleet to offer combat to the Spanish in the Pacific colonies. They outfitted a fleet of six ships to be commanded by George Anson. During the passage through the Strait of Magellan three of them disappeared, and the fourth ship, the "Wager", was wrecked. Her crew managed to reach land (at Valparaiso and Buenos Aires) only after great hardships. The two ships survived, the "Centurion" and the "Glouchester", reached Juan Fernandes, but the "Glouchester" was in such bad shape that she had to be abandoned. Of the 961 men that made up the crew of the original fleet only 335 remained. In spite of all this, Anson procedeed with the voyage in the "Centurion". He captured a Spanish Galleon loaded with gold near Manila, and returned to England after sailing around the world. Anson touched at Santa Catharina in 1740. He describes the position of the island, and its fortifications.. He also gives information about Brazil in general, and the gold mines recently discovered by the inhabitants of Sao Paulo. This is a classic account of circumnavigation which has been published in countless editions in French and other languages, as well as in English, and still is republished to this day”.
