A promotional brochure with brief descriptions of scenic points of interest and tourist attractions along the rail line of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway issued after the completion of its Denver-Salt Lake City main line west from Salida Colorado via Marshall Pass and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. "The railroad started as a 3 ft 914 mm narrow-gauge line running south from Denver Colorado in 1870. It served mainly as a transcontinental bridge line between Denver and Salt Lake City Utah . The Rio Grande was the epitome of mountain railroading with a motto of 'Through the Rockies not around them' and later 'Main line through the Rockies' both referring to the Rocky Mountains. The D&RGW operated the highest mainline rail line in the United States over the 10240 feet 3120 m Tennessee Pass in Colorado and the famed routes through the Moffat Tunnel and the Royal Gorge. At its height in the mid-1880s the D&RGW had the largest narrow-gauge railroad network in North America with 2783 miles 4479 km of track interconnecting the states of Colorado New Mexico and Utah" Wikipedia. It includes Fort Snelling; Minnehaha Falls; Oak Drive in White Bear Lake; a boat on White Bear Lake; St. Anthony's Falls in Minneapolis; Lake Minnetonka; Wabasha St. Bridge; an Old Brewery in St. Paul; Shanty-ville; Shelter Island New York; Goat Island; plus 3 portraits a bonfire scene and other views of the upper Mississippi River Niagara Falls and St. Paul Minnesota. Boards detached and spine perished; a few leaves loose and laid-in. Skilled work most of it on one side of the leaf therefore removable and suitable for display. <br/><br/>Harley DeWitt Nichols 1859-1939 was born in Barton Wisconsin. He began his education in art as early as 11 years of age. His first job putting his talent and training to use came in the form of an apprenticeship with the Milwaukee firm Marr & Richards where he stayed for 3 years drawing and engraving on wood. The subsequent years included many moves from Milwaukee to Chicago and later to New York where he studied at ASL and was encouraged by Professor Packard to pursue a career as an illustrator at a European school. Nichols left for Munich in October 1885 to attend the Royal Academy where he studied under Heckel became a member of the American Club and socialized with Carl von Marr the clubs president. He went to London for a little while and worked as an illustrator. By 1893 hed returned to New York working mostly in advertising and illustrating for Harpers Weekly and Century magazines. He helped organize the New York Water Color Club. Nichols didnt curb his parapatetic lifestyle until he moved to Laguna Beach California in 1894. The art community in Los Angeles was in its infancy but he got a teaching job at the Echo Mountain summer school and he was inspired by the scenery of Yosemite Monterey San Juan Capistrano and other locations in southern California. He stayed in Laguna Beach until his death in 1939. hardcover books

The emphasis is agriculture and stock raising with glowing essays including "Great Grazing District" "Livestock in the State" "Orchards and Groves Planted" "The Pure Air of the Prairies" "The Herd Law - No Fences Allowed" "The Cheapest Lands in America" "Sheep Raising in Nebraska" "Education the Birthright of Every Nebraska Child" etc. OCLC lists two similar items each in a single copy: one at Yale with the imprint of Lincoln: State Journal Co. 1881; and one at the Huntington with the imprint of St. Louis: A. Gast 1881 The present copy has no imprint. A. Zeese & Co. the Chicago engraving firm who is attributed on the first map specialized in half tones zinc etching relief-line lithogravure and photoelectric type. Su nombre es José Antonio por parte de su padre se apellida Campos y por parte de su madre Julián. He was part of the Orden de los Frailes Carmelitas. His first work was published in 1766 in Spain by Francisco Medina. He arrived in Buenos Aires and was appointed archbishop of the Rio de la Plata in 1780. Eximio teólogo escritor consumado se estilo sencillo fluido elegante y de conceptos claros. Conocedor profundo de la teología manejaba igualmente las Sagradas Escrituras los Santos Padres los autores profanos y clásicos. Muestra de ello son las Pastorales que en diferentes ocasiones y con varios motivos publicó para edificación de sus fieles para el arreglo y dirección de su diócesis. El Virrey Vértiz proyectaba ya desde 1781 la edición de sus Pastorales por cuenta del Erario en la imprenta de Niños Expósitos; si bien este proyecto no se concretó Vértiz las difundió profusamente " haciendo encuadernar más de trescientos volúmenes de las mismas con destino sin duda a las oficinas y empleados públicos de la colonia y de la metrópoli. En los pocos años que duró su gobierno realizó una obra fecundísima. investía y su propósito de consagrar al cumplimiento de las mismas" todos los talentos de su inteligencia todas las energías de su voluntad y todas las fuerzas de su cuerpo". Propuso al Cabildo municipal su pensamiento de establecer un Colegio de Niñas Huérfanas; esta idea se vio concretada cuando el 21 de abril de 1782 se inauguró el mencionado instituto. Urgía también la terminación de las obras de la catedral iniciadas un siglo antes por el Obispo Mercadillo. Antes de ausentarse de Córdoba hacia su nuevo destino el Alto Perú logró terminar alhajar y consagrar la Catedral el 29 de abril de 1785. A su paso por Catamarca en 1786 fundó el edificio para Casa y Colegio de Huérfanas de dicha ciudad. La actividad que desplegó como Arzobispo de La Plata fue similar a la realizada en Córdoba. Falleció en la nombrada ciudad de La Plata hoy Sucre República de Bolivia el 25 de marzo de 1804. De él dice Angel Clavero: "San Alberto era un Obispo de celo ardiente un gobernante de exquisita prudencia un hombre que tenía clara visión del porvenir un milagro de actividad un varón preocupado por el bien espiritual y material de sus subordinados un sacerdote según el corazón de Dios un patriota sincero y un religioso manso y dulce". Doña Purificación Gato Castaño que realizó su tesis doctoral sobre el mismo personaje ha recopilado las obras de fray Antonio de San Alberto repartidas entre Argentina y Bolivia y las ha encasillado en cuatro bloques fundamentales: de carácter religioso-moral político pedagógico y de disciplina eclesiástica. Según la autora "merece la pena publicar todo ese material por una parte por ser ésta una forma de dar a conocer ese tramo de historia que nos es común con Hispanoamérica por tratarse de unos escritos que exponen una serie de proyectos educativos en gran parte desconocidos sobre todo en España y por tratarse de un material que al estar tan disperso en lugares tan distintos y tan distantes no fácilmente accesibles no están al alcance de cualquiera". Armando Sejas pondera por su parte en "Presentación del arzobispo San Alberto como pastor y educador del pueblo" la labor educativa y pastoral de José Antonio de San Alberto el fraile carmelita descalzo que a fines del período indiano propone una formación sacerdotal continua espiritual y pedagógica en Charcas donde fue arzobispo entre 1785 y 1804. En ese lapso San Alberto funda el convictorio de Oratorianos el colegio de Niñas Huérfanas de la Plata y otro colegio en Catamarca. También escribe numerosas cartas pastorales y diversos textos porque a su juicio las palabras en las cartas y los libros "son más permanentes y por lo mismo tal vez más vivas y más eficaces que las dichas en el púlpito para persuadir mover y conmover los corazones". Original printed wrappers with woodblock vignette. SCARCE Hudson River Railroad travel guide published the first year in which the full line was completed. It covers points of interest along the route with woodblocks illustrating the text. Topics include: the history of the Hudson River the history of the construction of the Hudson River Railroad and the cities towns and villages along the Hudson from New York City all the way to Troy. Concerning the West Point Foundry at Cold Spring the guide states: "the iron foundry was established here by Gouverneur Kemble. The works are situated about a mile west of the village upon a small stream which tumbles rapidly down the mountains affording considerable water power. It is the largest establishment of its kind in the country employing nearly five hundred hands constantly." The building of the Hudson River Railroad is another topic in the guide. The project was considered highly impractical since much of the route had to be cut through extremely difficult rock and terrain. This section includes a description of the tunnels which had to be constructed. The railroad was opened in three stages. In September 1849 it allowed passengers to travel from New York to Peekskill. By that December 6 twenty-three additional miles were opened extending to New Hamburg. By the 31st of the month it was open the remaining distance of nine miles to Poughkeepsie. The Hudson River Railroad was an extension of the Troy and Greenbush Railroad which was chartered in 1845 connecting Troy South to Greenbush now Rensselaer on the east side of the Hudson. The Hudson River Railroad was chartered on May 12 1846 to extend this line south to New York City. The full line opened on October 3 1851 the same year in which this travel guide was published. Chief Justice Marshall sought to unravel the tangled knots of conflicting land titles in the case of Henderson v. Poindexter's Lessee 25 US 530 1827.
