The rapids of the St. Louis River near Duluth furnish "one of the greatest of all the available water powers of the world." Indeed "the water power of the Mississippi at its one place of fall is so much less in available power than the fall of the St. Louis River." When fully developed the area around Duluth will be preferable to Chicago for "the great markets of the East." Lavishly illustrated work on the Whale River Salmon Camp founded in 1967 by Stan Karbowski 1917-2010 the people the flora and the surrounding landscape of northern Quebec. The photographer Chuck Koosman first visited the Whale in 2001. David Ledie has fished the river for 18 years and chronicles the history of the camp and the changes in the salmon runs over the decades noting that the numbers of fish seen and caught came back dramatically when the Greenland and Newfoundland commercial salmon fisheries were bought out. <br/><br/>A beautiful production. "Progressive and prescient in all things he promoted new agricultural methods the founding of agricultural societies the development of waterways and steam navigation." DAB. He fought with great brilliance in the War of 1812 and rose from Captain to Brigadier General in eighteen months. He was against Slavery tobacco and was President of the American Temperance Union. He refused to run for public office although many attempts were made to persuade him to do so.
