L'ipotesi della deriva dei continenti enunciata da Alfred Wegener nel 1912 ebbe subito vasta risonanza nei vari settori delle scienze della Terra (paleogeografia, biogeografia, paleontologia, paleoclimatologia, geologia strutturale, fisica terrestre). Anche se il modello mobilista wegeneriano nella sua stesura originale non poteva essere accettato dai geofisici, contrastando il romanzesco navigare di una massa continentale a guisa di un iceberg nel mare con l'accertata rigidità della crosta terrestre quale si manifesta nei fenomeni sismici, tuttavia l'idea della deriva dei continenti, talora entusiasticamente accolta e talora avversata, e la serie impressionante di prove in suo favore illustrate dal Wegener in questo volume conservano a tutt'oggi il loro valore scientifico. Come scrive Marco Ciardi, nella nuova Postfazione di questa edizione, la lettura di La formazione dei continenti e degli oceani è ancora oggi essenziale «perché ci rende più consapevoli non solo di quale sia la storia del pianeta che abitiamo, ma di come dobbiamo relazionarci ad esso, per instaurare un corretto rapporto tra uomo e natura».
