Tribute to geologist and mining engineer Clarence King 1842-1901 published for the King Memorial Committee of the Century Association by G. P. Putnam's Sons. This volume contains the first appearance in book form of King's 38-page short story HELMET OF MAMBRINO. However the bulk of the volume consists of personal memoirs and biographical sketches of King -- with chapters contributed by James D. Hague John Hay William Dean Howells Henry Adams John LaFarge Edmund Clarence Stedman William Crary Brownell Edward Cary Samuel Franklin Emmons Daniel C. Gilman and Rossiter W. Raymond. Bibliography of King's publications. Synoptic Index. When Congress established the United States Geological Survey in 1878 it was King who was put in charge. King initiated the practice of using Hoffmann's contour lines to denote topography on maps and was among the first to make extensive use of the laboratory to solve geophysical problems. In addition to his many scientific contributions "from early youth King had shown literary qualities of a high order and it has always been a source of regret among his friends that he left so little evidence of it. A series of sketches appearing first in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY and afterward in book form under the caption of MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA 1872 and his HELMET OF MAMBRINO in the form of a letter to his friend `Don Horacio' Horace F. Cutter in San Francisco published in the CENTURY MAGAZINE May 1886 serve but to show his latent capability." -- DAB p. 386. Cowan p. 328 A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA 1510-1930.
