INSCRIBED SIGNED and dated Jan 1903 by the distinguished geologist Henry Stephens Washington 1867-1934. Most of this book's contents were first published in 1902 in the JOURNAL OF GEOLOGY v. 10. This 1903 edition was the first between hard covers; plus it added tables and a glossary. QUANTITATIVE CLASSIFICATION OF IGNEOUS ROCKS is the basis for the CIPW system of igneous rock taxonomy named CIPW for Cross Iddings Pirsson and Washington. According to Charles Milton Henry S. Washington's part in this was certainly one of his "most significant and enduring contributions to the science of geology: transforming the 'coordinates' of an igneous rock composition -- the list of essential oxide amounts reported in the bulk analysis -- into the chemical coordinates now known as the 'CIPW' norm. The ingenious schedule of calculations. is one of the signal triumphs of the golden age of petrography. What survives -- and thrives -- of the CIPW system is the norm calculation itself. Generations of petrologists have discovered. the norm often provides a characterization of rock composition more immediately meaningful than the oxide vector. The norm also proved invaluable in the critical business of characterizing the components and defining 'systems' studied in the phase equilibrium experimentation." -- National Academy of Sciences Biographical Memoirs V. 60 1991. See also Washington's biography in the DSB v. 14.; and the online tribute to him on the website of the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. The book's subtitle is: "With an introductory review of the development of systematic petrography in the nineteenth century by Whitman Cross." . INSCRIBED / SIGNED by Henry S. Washington.
