From the Dust Jacket: "Since the publication of Volume I of this work in 1959 the amount of new information that has accumulated is so large and so different in character that a companion volume became a necessity. Not only have obscure and forgotten gemstone deposits been profitably reopened but extensive new primary sources have been discovered all over the continent. Beautiful specimens of record size and quality have been found as well as entirely new species. Recent mineralogical analyses have yielded surprising data on the origin structure and properties of gemstone classes which is particularly important in identifying problem samples. This volume follows the format of the first: each class of stone -- precious industrial rare massive and organic -- is covered separately with deposits described in precise detail state by state and characteristic features shown in many black-and-white and color illustrations over 100 in all. Pertinent geological and mineralogical information is supplemented by interesting facts about the people involved in mining current price lists of various stones and numerous quotations from the literature and from personal communications. There is an updated geographical index and all the material is keyed to a bibliography of over 2600 entries dating from colonial times to the present -- the first and only definitive reference of its kind ever assembled." .
