ill., br. Tutti conoscono il canto del cuculo, ma pochi sanno qual è l'aspetto di questa specie e ancora meno sanno che piumaggio del maschio, della femmina e del giovane sono differenti. È quindi affascinante saper conoscere e riconoscere gli uccelli del nostro Paese. Se nel mondo esistono circa 10000 specie d'uccelli, più di 800 possono essere osservate in Europa. Questa guida presenta tutte le specie di uccelli osservate in Europa, illustrate con foto e didascalie, che permettono al solo colpo d'occhio di individuare i principali criteri per l'identificazione. Sono descritte le caratteristiche delle famiglie o dei generi che consentiranno di riconoscerli rapidamente. Inoltre ogni specie è presentata da un breve testo con le informazioni essenziali per l'identificazione, la vocalizzazione, l'habitat e la distribuzione. Nel testo sull'identificazione è fornita la dimensione media della specie o l'apertura alare per i rapaci o alcuni uccelli marini. Sono spiegati e dettagliati i diversi piumaggi, così come alcuni elementi comportamentali. Il testo relativo alla vocalizzazione fornisce una rapida descrizione del canto del maschio, quando rappresenta l'elemento chiave per contraddistinguere la specie, e/o il richiamo abituale della specie. Sono riportati gli habitat principali frequentati dalle diverse specie, precisando se si tratta di habitat frequentati in estate o in inverno, poiché alcune specie hanno una diversa stagionalità nell'utilizzo dei vari ambienti. Infine, la mappa di distribuzione distingue le aree occupate nel periodo riproduttivo (rosso), durante lo svernamento (azzurro), o tutto l'anno (viola). Le specie prive di mappa sono quelle accidentali o in dispersione in Europa o introdotte.

Beebe became world famous for his record breaking descent into the depths of the sea in the bathysphere in the 1930's. He was an accomplished naturalist but was also an ornithologist, entomologist, ichthyologist, ecologist and taxonomist as this volume clearly illustrates. There is also a chapter on Indian Charms by James Rodway. Included wtih this book is Beebe's article, 'The High World of the Rain Forest; In the Trinidad Jungle, Naturalist and Artist Work Together to Portray a Teeming Animal Kingdom Men Seldom See'. in the National Geographic magazine, June 1958, an 18 page article with two photos of Beebe and many full-page paintings by Guy Neale of butterflies and other insects, and the author's 12 rules for observing wild birds and animals in the forest (very good condition).
