The first edition of this work. Written by Welsh writer Walter Shaw Sparrow an expert on art and architecture. Illustrated with thirty-six prints in colour and one-hundred and twenty-one half-tone prints. Collated and complete. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally some shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Cloth has darkened slightly. Internally firmly bound. Covering a large time span; from Francis Barlow in the reign of Charles I and ending with J. F. Herring and the younger Wolstenholme. As the subject is Art in its relations with Sport and Sport in its patronage of Art this long period is particularly interesting because its changes and improvements mark a continuous evolution unbroken by revolutionary fashions and their reactions. Rebacked in green cloth gilt title to the spine and gilt embossed picture of a horse and rider to the front board. Externally boards are sound with only some light wear to the extremities.
