John Eddowes Sparrow and James Thorndike have issued a defense against political slander both in the print of the Suffolk Chronicle and the town. The Sparrow family which had continuously lived in the great house built in 1567 considered these charges malevolent. A very fascinating read of Ipswich before the rise of William Haldimand and the Reform Act of 1832. Extract bound in plain brown wraps. A. Dorkin (printer) unknown

Author Bio: Jakob Böhme German: bøm; 24 April 1575 17 November 1624 was a German philosopher Christian mystic and Lutheran Protestant theologian. He was considered an original thinker by many of his contemporaries within the Lutheran tradition and his first book commonly known as Aurora caused a great scandal. In contemporary English his name may be spelled Jacob Boehme retaining the older German spelling; in seventeenth-century England it was also spelled Behmen approximating the contemporary English pronunciation of the German Böhme. Böhme had a profound influence on later philosophical movements such as German idealism and German Romanticism. Hegel described Böhme as "the first German philosopher". Synopsis: THIS book of the Mysterium Magnum being an exposition of Genesis if it be read through and weighed with good attention will remove those mists from their eyes that have not diligently perused the other writings of the author Jacob Behm which hath occasioned their being offended by the stumbling blocks that have lain in their way from the misreports and relations of others who have but superficially looked upon them and taken up surmisings at the second or third hand and so come to be bereaved of the greatest benefit to their understandings which they would infallibly gain if they would follow the advice in the last paragraph of the last chapter of this book where the author says: We admonish the reader that when he finds somewhat in any place of our deep sense to be obscure that he do not condemn it according to the manner of the evil world; but diligently read and pray to God who will surely open the door of his heart so that he will apprehend it and be able to make use of it to the profit and salvation of his soul. 1919134644London: John Lane The Bodley Head 1919. Very Good. London John Lane The Bodley Head 1919. Quarto x 288 pages with numerous illustrations plus 50 plates 6 double-page some in colour some with captioned tissue-guards. Buckram a little marked scuffed and sunned on the spine; endpapers offset and a little foxed with occasional light scattered foxing elsewhere; a very good copy. Provenance: Will Ashton with his Lionel Lindsay-designed bookplate on the front pastedown - a felicitous combination all round. English-born Sir John William Will Ashton 1881-1963 emigrated with his parents to Adelaide when he was a child; his father was the artist James Ashton. 'In 1900 Will left for England to work under the seascapist Julian Olsson at St Ives Cornwall. He spent the winter of 1902-03 at the Académie Julian Paris with E. Phillips Fox David Davies and Hans Heysen. He made frequent overseas trips sometimes with such artists as Lionel Lindsay and Charles Bryant; he returned again and again to Paris. He won the Wynne prize in 1930 and in 1939. Will Ashton had worked mainly in oils from about 1910. He was fascinated by the effects of changing light on white such as snow cloud and foam and his most characteristic works are impressionist seascapes and landscapes. He used a free and vigorous treatment in impasto while not departing from design and good draftsmanship. Lindsay wrote that Ashton had caught the changing Paris landscape "with such a fine truth and vision that you will go far in Europe today to find so able a painter"' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The bookplate depicts Ashton painting on the banks of the River Seine with the Notre Dame Cathedral prominent in the background. John Lane, The Bodley Head unknown
